Catawba Hands Coker First Loss of the Season

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba opened its season with a 15-9 victory over visiting Coker on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. Matt Symes (Coquitlam, BC/Centennial) and John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington) each had four goals to help the Indians start 1-0. The Cobras fall to 1-1.

Catawba never trailed, scoring the first three goals. Steven Ridolfo (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Gettysburg) got the opening goal at the 12:34 mark and Catawba got two goals in 14 seconds for the 3-0 lead with 6:43 to go in the first quarter. Coker twice pulled within a goal, but tallies from Symes and Ridolfo in the final two minutes of the half to give Catawba a 7-4 edge at the break.

Symes scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half as the Indians pushed their advantage to 10-4. Catawba would go up 15-6 late in the fourth before three goals from the Cobras in the final four minutes closed the gap to six by the final whistle.

Scheich added two assists to his four goals, while Symes also had a helper. Ridolfo and Gage Mason (Apex, MC/Apex HS) each scored a pair of goals. Daniel Rew (Forest Hill, MD/Bel Air HS) won 13 of 14 face-offs and collected 10 ground balls. Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Stevenson) recorded 15 saves.

Mike Martiello scored three goals for Coker. Keith LaClair had two goals and two assists. Josh Masciarelli totaled 18 saves.

Catawba held a 5-35 edge in shots and grabbed 49 ground balls to 44 for the Cobras. The Indians won 17 of 27 face-offs.

The Indians will next host Mount Olive on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

SALISBURY, N.C. A fourth quarter comeback by Cobra fell short, as Coker lost to Catawba, 15-9, on Saturday (Feb. 16) afternoon in college lacrosse. The loss drops the Cobras to 1-1.

Coker outscored Catwaba 4-3 in the fourth quarter, but the Cobras ran out of time as the Indians held on for the win. The Cobras found themselves down 3-1 after the first quarter, but they bounced back with three goals in the second half and went into halftime trailing 7-4.

The Indians posted five goals in the third quarter and held Coker to just one, taking a 12-5 lead into the final stanza. After allowing three goals early in the fourth, the Cobras scored three unanswered goals in the final three and a half minutes of the game.

Mike Martiello scored a hat trick and he picked-up a team high 10 ground balls. Keith LaClair added two goals and two assists, while John Bretton had a goal and an assist. Adam Zinsmeister, Ryan Maurer and Joshua Taylor scored the remaining goals for the Cobras, with each player netted a single goal.

Josh Masciarelli made 18 saves on 33 shots in the goal for Coker.

The Cobras will hit the field again on Monday in their 2013 home opener against LIU Post. Face-off is set for 4:00 p.m. at Byerly Park in Hartsville.
