Eighth-Ranked Red Devils Open with Victory at Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. Sophomore Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning Painted Post West) finished with a goal and three assists to lead Lycoming, but five Dickinson players scored two goals to lead the eighth-ranked Devils to a 15-6 non-conference win in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at an icy Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Reilly assisted on the first goal of the season for the Warriors (0-1 overall), dishing out a pass to junior Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) with 1:30 left in the third quarter and then he got on the board himself less than a minute later, scoring with 41 seconds left in the third on a give from senior Tom Lurie (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air). He also added two fourth quarter helpers.

However, the Devils (1-0 overall) jumped out to a 10-0 lead through the game's first 43 minutes, taking control in the second quarter with five goals after both teams struggled to find the back of the net in the first 15 minutes. Tyler White finally got the Devils on the board with nine seconds left in the first and then Preseason All-American Christian Beitel notched the next two goals.

In the third quarter, Preseason All-American Brian Cannon assisted on two goals and scored another, but Lycoming didn't go quietly, as its offense began to awaken late in the third with the strikes from McCaffer and Reilly.

In the fourth quarter, senior Stephen Romano (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) and freshman Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) each scored unassisted in the first 2:30 minutes and then junior Jason Breau (Lima, N.Y./Honeyoye Falls-Lima) and McCaffer added tallies on assists from Reilly to make it 12-6 with 4:39 left.

The Devils closed the game with three goals in the final 2:30 to round out the scoring.

McCaffer led the Warriors with two goals and senior Matt Doherty (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) led the team with eight groundballs while Reilly and freshman Michael Wagner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary's) each added four. Wagner and sophomore Joe Marchetti (Cortland, N.Y./Homer) each posted two caused turnovers.

Cannon and Brian Gleason each posted a goal and two assists and Rob Kendall added two goals and an assist. Beitel, White, Chris Menard and Will Scott each posted two goals. Carter Moore notched eight groundballs and Draper Donley added five while Preseason All-American Brandon Palladino notched two assists and four caused turnovers.

In net, Dickinson's trio of Greg Hanley, Max Pawk and Palmer Murray combined to make 13 saves. Sophomore Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) posted nine saves in the first half for Lycoming, allowing six goals, and junior Andrew Hauk (Sackets Harbor, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) notched 11 saves and allowed nine goals in the second half.
