St. Andrews Hold off the Citadel for One-Goal Victory

Laurinburg, NC - St. Andrews was able to hold off the Citadel, 9-8, Wednesday evening at Scotland HS in the Knights first home game in two years.

SAU had a great little cheering section from the students over at Pate Stadium as the team was able to feed off the positive energy flowing around the stadium, mostly due to the excitement of lacrosse back n Laurinburg and the success of St. Andrews athletics today.

The Knights were able to get off to an impressive 3-0 lead after the first quarter due to stellar defense and goals from the freshmen trio of Jonathon Arvin, Jake Brown, and Matt Benedict.

SAU then added a late goal from sophomore Dugan McDermott who took it the length of the field for the 4-2 lead right before half.

After intermission, SAU extended their lead to 7-3 off goals from freshman Jason Wilson, who scored 2 and another from Benedict. Wilson scored his 2nd with just 7 seconds left in the quarter.

Then in the fourth, the Bulldogs (2-1) mounted a comeback as they scored three goals to cut SAU's lead to 7-6. However, the Knights responded with two of their own from freshman Connor Cather to extend their lead to 9-6 before The Citadel answered with two late goals. However, they could get no more as freshman midfielder Randy Loving dominated the last face off to secure the Knight win, 9-8 and add to the collection of big wins in Knight Athletics today.

SAU outshot the Citadel 38-25 and recorded 37 ground balls led by freshman Malcolm Blaine's 10.

SAU, now 2-1 will continue their home stand when they host UNC-Charlotte this Sunday at 2:00 pm at Knights field.
