Hartwick Men's Lacrosse Set to Begin 2013 Season

ONEONTA, NY- Fifteen-year head coach Bill Bjorness returns three of his top four scorers from last year and has a solid blend of veterans and new talent for 2013. Hartwick will look to improve on its 7-8 mark from last season.

Leading the offense on attack is senior Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY). Hughes was an Empire 8 Second Team selection last year after tallying a team-high 48 goals and 56 points. His 48 goals was the fifth-best season total in Hawks history.

Hughes finished the season second in the Empire 8 in goals per game (3.20) and seventh in points per game (3.73). In addition, his goals per game average ranked eighth nationally.

He is closing in on the career scoring record at Hartwick. Hughes currently ranks second in goals scored (140) and he is eighth in points (162) on the Hawks' all-time list.

Also returning on offense is junior Phil Schaefer (Loudonville, NY), who scored 29 goals last season and had a team-high 20 assists. Junior Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY) accumulated 29 points (15g, 14a) last season and will bolster the unit.

Junior Tucker Bradley (Hingham, MA), along with sophomores Kristopher Sanders (Tillsonburg, Ontario), Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY), Dylan Malloy (Kings Park, NY), and Johnathan Behning (Hanover, MA) will provide added depth.

Looking to make contributions in the midfield will be sophomores Conor McGoldrick (Longmeadow, MA), Brendan Dieck (Lafayette Hill, PA), juniors Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA), Zach Gropper (Syosset, NY), Sean Kelly (Ridgefield, CT) and senior Irvens Dupuy (Norwalk, CT).

Freshmen Adam Goss (Jamesville, NY), Elliot Rose (Brick, NJ), Jacob Whitmore (Manchester, NY), Zach Ryan (Shelton, CT), and Brandon Lane (Wyandanch, NY) will all see playing time during the season.

Returning on defense is Max Cooper (Manlius, NY), who received Empire 8 Honorable Mention last season. Both Max and his brother Jake Cooper (Manlius, NY), combined for 96 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers on the defensive end in 2012.

Sophomore Charlie Walsh (Centerport, NY) and senior Pat Leone (Northport, NY) will also see time along with sophomore Shaun Eichner (Pine Bush, NY) and freshmen Kevin Rourke (Long Beach, NY) and Pat McMahon (Churchville, NY).

At short stick defensive middie will be seniors Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, NY), Joe Pellegrino (Oakdale, NY), and sophomore Fred Golini (Ronkonkoma, NY). Seeking playing time at that position will be juniors Xavier Clair (Walden, NY) and Rocky Dinga (Binghamton, NY). Sophomore Johnny Gaul (Ridgewood, NJ) and junior Brandon Manfredo (Huntington Station, NY) will also factor into the mix.

Sophomore Connor Hudson (Moriches, NY) played in all 15 games with 11 starts at the face-off position last year as a freshman. He won 129 out of 227 face-offs while picking up a team-leading 61 groundballs. Also seeing time will be junior Shane Latsko (East Longmeadow, MA). He played in 10 games last season, accumulated 22 ground balls and was 37 of 70 on face-offs.

Goalkeeping will be an open competition among senior Carl Lengel (Lafayette Hill, PA), sophomore Matthew Galvin (Medway, MA), and freshmen Matt Hin (Miller Place, NY) and Michael Rourke (Long Beach, NY). Lengel started three games last season with a 2-0 record and an 8.46 goals against average. Galvin started three games and was 2-2 with a 10.97 goals against average.

The Hawks will face teams from the Skyline (Mt. St. Mary, Farmingdale), SUNYAC (Potsdam, Oneonta), NEAC (Cazenovia), NAC (Castleton State), and the CCC (Salve Regina) in their non-conference schedule this season. The annual battle with local rival Oneonta State will be March 12.

The Empire 8 Conference should be one of the strongest in the country once again this season. Stevens has been selected 7th in the USILA Preseason Coaches' Poll. Ithaca, Nazareth, and St. John Fisher all will stand in the Hawks' way of a conference playoff berth.

Hartwick gets the 2013 season underway on the road with a non-conference game against Salve Regina at Gaudet Middle School on Friday afternoon. Game time will be at 3:00 p.m.
