No. 3 Florida Scores First 11 and Cruises Past UC Davis

The 12-point win was the largest margin of victory for the Orange and Blue since May 19, 2012 when the Gators defeated ALC foe Penn State 15-2 in the NCAA tournament. The Gators wrap up their three-game homestand on Sunday as they host Albany with a noon opening draw at Dizney Stadium.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Senior attacker Elizabeth Datino scored her 20th career hat trick but UC Davis was overmatched by third-ranked Florida, falling 16-4 to its 2013 season opener in collegiate women's lacrosse action at Donald R. Dizney Stadium Friday evening.

The Aggies open at 0-1 in their first year under new coach Kate Henwood. The Gators improve to 5-0 for the season.

Besides Datino's three goals, senior midfielder Hannah Mirza added one to go with her team-high five draw controls. Sophomore Meghan Jordan posted the lone assist for UC Davis while contributing three draw controls and two caused turnovers in her first game coming back from a year-long injury. Senior defender Tess Alekna provided four ground balls and matched Jordan's two steals.

For Florida, senior Ashley Bruns netted four goals and two assists while four Gators chipped in two goals each. UF outshot its guest by a 20-3 margin in an 11-0 first half, including three on power plays. UC Davis, which only managed one shot in the first 20 minutes of play, got on the board in the 39th minute when Jordan assisted Mirza to bring the score to 13-1 in Florida's favor.

Datino followed with three straight goals from the 15:12 to the 9:24 marks in the second, her hat trick making it 15-4 for the Gators. Jordan had a chance to cut the margin to 10 when she forced a turnover against UF's Nicole Graziano. Jordan fired a shot on frame but Gator goalie Mary-Sean Wilcox was there for the save.

Each team platooned two goalkeepers for the contest. Sophomore Kai Murphy earned her first collegiate start, totaling six saves with eight goals in roughly 39 minutes between the pipes. Junior Jordan Majka relieved Murphy early in the first half, stopping five shots in her 21:24 of crease time. For the Gators, Mikey Meagher posted two saves in her shutout first half, then Wilcox took over in the second half with six saves.

UC Davis concludes its Sunshine State trip at Stetson on Sunday. Game time from DeLand is 11:00 a.m. Pacific.
