WORCESTER, Mass. (Feb. 23, 2013) Senior midfielder Michael Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y.) combined record nine points as Mercy posted a 12-5 victory at Assumption College on Saturday afternoon. Mercy improves to 2-0 to start the season while Assumption starts off at 0-1.

The Mavericks impressed in many aspects of the game, and not just on offense. Mercy did dominate on offense, more than doubling Assumption's shot total (45-22, including 26-4 over the middle two quarters), and converting 4-7 man-up opportunities. The Mavericks also successfully completed 14 of 16 clears, held another slight edge in ground balls and limited themselves to just 18 turnovers and a single, 60-second penalty.

Mercy opened up the scoring just over four minutes into the game and made it 2-0 barely a minute later as freshman attackman Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y.) and sophomore attackman Bobby McDonough (Farmingdale, N.Y.) each notched their first career goals, with McDonough benefitting from Wood's first assist of the day.

Assumption recovered and netted three goals in a three-minute span to take the lead with 1:37 remaining in the first quarter, but Mercy picked up a quick goal from Wood with 50 seconds to play to draw even.

The Mavericks took over the game through the next two quarters. Marzocca struck almost immediately in the second to put Mercy ahead by one, a lead the Mavericks would never relinquish. He added a second tally on a man-up opportunity as the quarter ended as well on Wood's second assist of the game.

McDonough made it a three-goal lead with an unassisted score less than a minute into the third quarter. Last week's top scorer, senior attackman Joe Poppe (Elbridge, N.Y.) came on for the first time all game and promptly netted another brace, with both goals coming on man-up opportunities and one courtesy of yet another assist from Wood. The Mavericks led 8-3 heading into the final period.

Marzocca scored Mercy's fourth man-up goal of the day early in the fourth quarter, which senior attackman Frank Henenlotter (Lynbrook, N.Y.) followed up with a goal of his own. Wood assisted on both tallies as the Mavericks surged to an insurmountable 10-3 lead.
