Sage Era Opens in Style as Royals Down Farmingdale State

SCRANTON, Pa.-The Doug Sage era opened on a positive note for University of Scranton Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.

Behind a career-high six goals from senior midfielder Dillon McInerney (Hawthorne, NJ/Bergen Catholic) and a 13-save performance by senior goalkeeper Ben Worthington (Jenkintown, Pa./Archbishop Wood), the Royals made Sage's head coaching debut a memorable one with a 9-3 victory over Farmingdale State.

McInerney scored three goals during a six-minute span of the second period to break a 1-1 tie that propelled Scranton to a 4-1 halftime lead. He added two more in the third period as the Royals extended their lead to 8-2.

Junior midfielder John Gregitis (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph's Preparatory) chipped in two goals and junior attacker Joe Johnson (Annapolis, Md./Gonzaga) had one for Scranton, which held a 37-29 advantage in shots and a 38-27 margin in ground balls.

Senior midfielder Jason Opitz (West Hempstead, NY/Holy Trinity/NYIT), junior midfielder Vince Aniano (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside), and freshman attacker Matthew Visintin (Yonkers, NY/St. Michael Academy) scored a goal apiece for Farmingdale State.

Defensively, senior Tim Cleary (Shrewsbury, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) finished with three of Scranton's 10 caused turnovers and scooped up five ground balls. And even though the Royals were whistled for 11 penalties, they allowed only two extra-man opportunity goals.

Sophomore midfielder Matt Finor (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) also played a key role in today's victory, winning 10 of 15 face-offs and finishing with a game-high six ground balls.

The Royals will return to action this Wednesday, February 27, against York College in York, Pennsylvania, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Scranton, Penn. - Farmingdale State fell, 9-3, in their 2013 season opener at The University of Scranton on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 1-0 midway through the first period, Farmingdale State senior midfielder Jason Opitz (West Hempstead, N.Y.) evened the score with a man-up goal off the pass from Bobby Thomas (Wantagh, N.Y.).

Scranton senior midfielder Dillon McInerney (Hawthorne, N.J.) scored three unassisted goals in the second period to give the Royals a 4-1 lead at halftime.

Scranton added the first four goals in the third, before junior midfielder Vincent Aniano (Oceanside, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal with 11 seconds left in the period to cut the Rams deficit to 8-2. Each team added one goal in the final period as the Royals picked up their first win of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Thomas Fallon (Kings Park, N.Y.) made 13 saves for Farmingdale State, while senior Ben Worthington (Jenkintown, Penn.) stopped 13 shots for Scranton.

The Rams next will host Plattsburgh State in a non-conference game on Friday, March 1st at 4:00 p.m.
