Eck Leads Washington & Jefferson to Win at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Senior attacker Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) fired in five goals, while adding a pair of assists to lead Washington & Jefferson to a 14-5 victory over Thiel on Saturday afternoon in the 2013 season opener at the Alumni Stadium Dome.

The win gave first-year Head Coach Daniel Usaj his first collegiate victory. The Presidents never trailed after posting a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes. Eck scored 28 seconds in, while sophomore attacker Tim Angell (Andover, Mass./Governor's Academy) added a goal at the 6:19 mark.

The Tomcats rallied for two goals in the final five minutes of the first quarter, but W&J took control of the match by netting five of the six goals during the second quarter. Angell scored the first two goals of the quarter to ignite the run, while senior midfielder Tom Starr (Lorrain, Ohio/Friends Academy) added the next two.

After leading 7-3 at halftime, Washington & Jefferson scored the first four goals of the second half to take a commanding 11-3 advantage with 11 minutes left.

Angell racked up six points with four goals and two assists, while Starr produced three goals and two helpers. Eck (12) and Starr (10) combined for 22 shot attempts.

In goal, sophomore Conor Crowe (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) collected 12 saves for the Presidents, who outshot the Tomcats 43-32. Sophomore defender Chase Bennett (Prospect, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) led the way with five ground balls.
