Oberlin Cruises to a Season-Opening Win at Olivet

Olivet, MI Oberlin scored 10 first-quarter goals and never looked back en route to earning a 22-11 victory over Olivet on Saturday afternoon.

The Yeomen had 11 different players finish with at least one goal in the game with sophomore standout Sean Higgins leading the way by matching a career-high with six goals five of which came in the first half. Rookie Nick Lobley added four scores, while Mickey Fiorillo contributed a hat trick with three tallies of his own.

The 22 goals scored by the Yeomen are the most any Oberlin squad in well over a decade.

"I was glad to see us get off to a fast start," third-year Head Coach Topher Grossman said. "We did not let the cold weather bother us and were able to focus on the task at hand. With the big lead we were able to get a lot of guys into the game and work on some things we needed to."

Higgins scored three of Oberlin's first five goals less than four minutes into the game. Alex Wagman and Lobley also added their first collegiate goals in the period as the Yeomen led 10-2 after 15 minutes of play. The Yeomen added six more scores in the second and went into halftime up 16-5.

In the second half the Yeomen focused on playing a possession style, as they would score just three goals in each of the two remaining periods.

Despite the lopsided score line, the Yeomen slightly won the ground ball battle 56-52 and won just 19 of the game's 37 face-offs. The Yeomen did out-shoot the Comets 41-35.

Three different goalies saw time in the cage for Oberlin with freshman Miles Brooke earning the win after playing the first 22 minutes in goal.

Oberlin returns to action on Wednesday night at Trine University (IN). The opening face-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
