Hartwick Falls in Opener at Mount Saint Mary

NEWBURGH, NY Hartwick lost its opening game of the season on Saturday, 8-6, at Mount Saint Mary. The Hawks battled back from a four-goal deficit in the second half to close the gap to two but could get no closer.

Freshman midfielder Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) scored a pair of goals in her first collegiate game to lead 'Wick. Fellow freshman Ally Naja (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) contributed a goal and an assist in her college debut.

Kaileen Spadaro registered three goals and two assists for the Knights in the victory. Claire Duffy added two scores and Danielle Krupka scored a goal and dished out two assists.

MSMC took the lead four minutes, 54 seconds into the game on a Spadaro tally from Krupka. The Hawks evened the score on Naja's tally less than five minutes later with sophomore midfielder Lisa Littleton (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) earning the assist.

The Knights wasted little time retaking the advantage as they scored an unassisted goal just 29 second after Naja's tally. They would keep the lead for the remainder of the day.

Mount Saint Mary would score four consecutive goals over a 12 and a half minute span to up its lead to four, 5-1, with 7:55 left in the opening half. Igdeler, Spadaro, Krupka, and Duffy accounted for the Knights' tallies.

The Hawks answered with a pair of Ference unassisted goals 2:58 from one another to cut the deficit to three with 3:51 left. Duffy sent the hosts into halftime up four, however, as she scored with two minutes left.

Katie McGinnis added to Mount's total 1:26 into the second half from Igdeler. Hartwick responded 2:10 later as senior Kate O'Shea (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) scored off a Meg Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) feed.

Spadaro closed out her team's scoring with 21:25 remaining in the game with her third of the day and the Knights held an 8-4 lead.

Freshman Selena Dardia (Freeville, NY/Dryden) picked up her first goal in a Hartwick uniform less than two minutes later. Sophomore Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro HS) then trimmed the Knights' edge to two on a goal from Naja with 13:53 to play. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they could not find another goal the rest of the way in the contest.

Freshman Mandy Van Auken (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) tied for a team-high with three ground balls for the Hawks. She also caused three Knight miscues on the afternoon. Naja and Littleton each earned two draw controls apiece.

Hartwick goalkeeper Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) made nine saves in the game. She also caused a game-high four turnovers and added three ground balls.

Knight goalie Deirdre Ray stopped six Hartwick shots in the game. Erin Murray accumulated a game-high seven ground balls and Igdeler grabbed a game-high four draws.

The Hawks are back in action on Friday afternoon in their home opener. 'Wick hosts Marywood University at 4:00 p.m.
