Mount Olive Dominates Q3 to Down Wingate

Duarte gave Mount Olive the lead for good with 35 seconds left in the first frame. Daniel Shields started the second quarter (10:02) with his first goal of the day to nudge the hosts' lead to 4-2. Kendall responded for Wingate at the 7:29 mark, making the score 4-3 Mount Olive at intermission.

The Trojans outscored the Bulldogs 6-1 in the third quarter. Six different players scored a goal for Mount Olive. Wingate's only third quarter tally was a Vogrig goal on a Chase Clifton assist at the 9:57 plateau. Mount Olive led 10-4 entering the fourth quarter.

Mount Olive started the fourth quarter by scoring three of the first four goals to take a 13-5 advantage on a Matt Shields-to-Daniel Shields scoring play with 10:15 remaining. The Bulldogs scored the final four goals of the game, with Vogrig, senior attack Taylor Womble (Cary, N.C.), Chase Clifton and Kendall finding the back of the nets.

Neither team could take advantage of extra-man opportunities. Wingate was zero for six, while Mount Olive was one for five. The Trojans outshot the Bulldogs 36-23. Mount Olive held a 43-26 edge in ground balls. Both goalkeepers went the distance. Mount Olive freshman goalkeeper Rocky Bowman (New Westminster, B.C.) earned the victory. He had seven saves. Bulldog redshirt junior goalkeeper Patrick Cooney (Cazenovia, N.Y.) recorded 10 saves during his 60 minutes.

Wingate starts Deep South Conference play Thursday, hosting Florida Southern for a 3:30 p.m. contest. Mount Olive entertains Lake Erie (Ohio) Saturday at 12:00 p.m..
