Mid-Game 10-Goal Run Lifts Bulldog to Win over CMS

Redlands fired off 10 unanswered goals to overcome an early deficit en route to a 12-9 victory over visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday in SCIAC competition. After CMS scored the first four goals of the game, the Bulldogs held the opponents to only two in the second half, completing the hard-fought comeback.

The Athenas nabbed three of the first four draw controls, establishing early possession in the contest, which led to four consecutive goals.

Junior midfielder KK McCaslin (Portland, OR) got the Bulldogs on the board with her unassisted goal with 21:16 remaining in the first stanza.

But the offensive rally was short-lived, as CMS continued to go to goal, firing off two more scores less than five minutes later.

Following a big save by graduate student goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) on a CMS free-position attempt, the Bulldogs put together a successful scoring run down the field with sophomore midfielder Emily Dalrymple (Snohomish, WA) finding senior attack player Aimee Dewan (Alamo, CA) for Redlands' second netter.

Minutes later, the Athenas' sophomore midfielder Erin Chavanne made it a 7-2 game with just over 12 minutes to go in the half.

But Redlands regrouped after an unexpected CMS timeout, as Dewan rattled off two scores during the final seven minutes of the period.

Another big defensive play by Martinez halted any chance of a late CMS score to close out the half, resulting in only a three-goal deficit for the Bulldogs at the break.

Nineteen seconds into the second stanza, the Maroon and Gray attacked the goal for an early netter, as junior attack player Allie Hoffler (Draper, UT) connected with junior midfielder Jacky Craycraft (Trabuco Canyon, CA).

This opened the offensive floodgates for Redlands, which fired off eight straight scores in the first nine minutes of the second half. Among the highlights during this stretch, freshman midfielders Ellen Holt (Portland, OR) and Stephanie Garrett (San Diego, CA) recorded goals for the Bulldogs, while senior midfielder Crystal Painter (Lake George, NY) distributed two assists and found the back of net once.

Leading by a score of 12-7, the Maroon and Gray buckled down its defense while possessing the ball as much as possible for the remainder of the game.

After Redlands' impressive run, CMS' senior midfielder Madi Shove managed to tally her team's only two goals during the second half. She finished the day with four scores and one assist.

Redlands' Dewan also recorded four goals in the game, while McCaslin, Holt and Garrett each added two. Craycraft and Painter provide one apiece, as Hoffler and Painter each offered two assists.

Painter also racked up seven draw controls, winning half of the Bulldogs' possessions.

Martinez recorded five saves for the Bulldogs, while CMS' freshman goalkeeper Sara Ginsburg provided six for the Athenas (2-3, 2-3 SCIAC).

Redlands (5-1, 4-1 SCIAC) heads to Tennessee for a Spring-Break trip that includes a game at Sewanee on Thursday and a showdown against Carthage College (WI) on Saturday.
