Shippensburg Comes Back to Top Mercyhurst, 15-13
Shippensburg (3-4) used a 6-2 run to close the game to come from behind and knock off Mercyhurst (6-7) at Tullio Field, 15-13 Sunday, April 9.
The game was a see-saw battle that featured 10 ties and eight lead changes.
The Raiders got on the board first with a goal from Lauren Wells at 26:22. Mercyhurst rebounded and grabbed a 6-4 lead after a goal by Lindsay Jackson with 5:28 to play in the half.
Kristen Crutchfield, who led all players with six goals, scored three goals in the final 4:23 of the first half to put Shippensburg on top at the half, 7-6.
Mercyhurst tied the game less than a minute into the second half on a Jessie Horeth goal. Brita Paul and Crutchfield scored to put the Raiders ahead 9-7 with 26:59 to play.
Mercyhurst fought back with three straight goals from Kelsey French to claim a 10-9 advantage. Alicia Guzzo found the back of the net for an 11-9 lead with 14:35 to play.
Shippensburg started its game-winning run with a goal just 30 seconds later from Kim Hudicka. Kelly Smith and Wells scored goals to put Shippensburg ahead 12-11 at the 7:34 mark.
The Lakers regrouped and led 13-12 after Lauren Smith and Angela Schumerth scored less than a minute apart at 5:57 and 5:03, respectively.
Two goals from Crutchfield one from Cristin Marron between 3:32 and 2:05 lifted the Raiders to the win.
Three of Crutchfield's six goals came on free position attempts. Wells scored three goals and Marron had a pair, including the game-winner.
French scored four goals in the game to lead Mercyhurst. Haggerty added three goals and three assists. Jackson scored once and assisted on two goals.
Haggerty's three assists moved her total to 28 on the year, tied for the third most in a season by a Laker. With six total points, she now has 61 ponts on the year, also the third best in a season and just one out of second place on Mercyhurst's single season chart.
Shippensburg's Michelle Mangle and Megan Foley of Mercyhurst both made seven saves.
The Raiders got a defensive boost from Kaitlin Keene, who caused four turnovers.
The game concluded a four-game homestand for the Lakers. Mercyhurst hits the road for a game at St. Vincent on April 11 before returning home. Mercyhurst faces Philadelphia on Senior Day at 3:00 PM on April 15.
