William & Mary Falls at ODU in CAA Opener

NORFOLK, Va. (Feb. 26, 2013) - William & Mary fell at Old Dominion, 15-9, in its conference opener on Tuesday evening.

W&M (1-3, 0-1) owned a 7-2 advantage late in the first half, but ODU (1-2, 1-0) rallied back with an 11-1 run to earn the victory in the Optima Health Challenge match-up.

Sophomore Kaleigh Noon led the Tribe with three points (2g, 1a), while senior Kyrstin Mackrides and junior Jenna Dougherty both recorded a pair of goals apiece. Senior Katie Stillwell also came up big with a goal, five ground balls and three caused turnovers, while senior Hannah Clarke posted three draw controls.

The Green and Gold owned a 14-12 edge in draw controls, but ODU held a 27-18 advantage in ground balls.

Things looked good for W&M early as it jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening minutes, as sophomore Maggie Bermingham, Dougherty and Stillwell all posted goals.

Although the Lady Monarchs responded with a pair of scores to narrow the margin to 3-2 with 19:26 showing, the Tribe rattled off a 4-0 run to build a 7-2 advantage with less than four minutes remaining in the first half. Mackrides scored twice during the stretch, while Dougherty and junior Taelor Salmon also found the back of the cage.

After tallying the final goal of the opening stanza, ODU opened the second half with six unanswered scores to take a 9-7 lead with 18:11 remaining. Although Noon snapped the run with a goal at the 15:32 mark, W&M scored just once more during the remainder of the second half.

Emily Austerberry led ODU with six points on four goals and two assists, while Ashmore Standing added five goals.

The Tribe will return to action when it plays at Stetson this Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
