Hanley Stops 20 as No. 7 Dickinson Takes Down No. 5 Cabrini

Carlisle, Pa. Dickinson came out on top in a top-10 showdown on Wednesday afternoon, as the #7-ranked Red Devils posted a 12-6 decision on #5-Cabrini College.

Senior goaltender Greg Hanley (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) anchored a tremendous defensive effort, making 20 saves on the afternoon.

After a slow start, the Red Devils put away a pair of goals late in the first quarter. First-year Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) struck first with 3:22 remaining. They capitalized on a fast break as senior long-pole defender Peter Zouck (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) fed a beautiful pass to classmate Christian Beitel (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) at the 1:09 mark.

The Cavaliers pulled even in the second quarter, breaking through for a goal at the 6:08 mark and finishing an extra-man opportunity as time expired to knot the game, 2-2.

All-American long-pole midfielder Brandon Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) gave the Devils the lead once again, scoring off an assist from first-year Mattison Hamilton (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell), with just 11 seconds remaining in the half.

First-year Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) tried to give the Devils a little breathing room, scoring off an assist from Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) with 9:19 to play in the third period. Cabrini answered less than a minute later as Andrew Protenic scored off an assist from Andre Layne.

Junior Will Scott (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) found the net, finishing an assist from senior Nick Leon (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga). The Cavaliers answered again, this time with an unassisted tally from Joey Shallow.

Dickinson did finally put some distance between them and the Cavaliers as Tyler White (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) and Beitel closed out the quarter with unassisted goals at the 3:48 and 2:09 marks, to stretch the lead to, 7-4, at the end of the third.

The Red Devils controlled the better part of the fourth quarter, outscoring the guests, 5-2. Bobby Thorp scored off an assist from Mike Leyden before the Devils finished the game with a 4-1 run.

Senior Matt Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) scored from long range with 13:29 on the clock. Beitel and Cannon connected to give Dickinson its largest lead of the day, 9-5, at the 11:43 mark. Thorp found Damian Sobieski for the Cavs' final tally of the day, just 33 seconds later.

Kendall and Cannon sandwiched unassisted goals around a tally from first-year Kobi Frankel (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon), scoring off an assist from Brett Parker (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's).

The Red Devil defense was solid all afternoon, despite facing 42 shots on the day. Zouck controlled five ground balls while junior Draper Donley (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) picked-up three and forced a turnover.

Junior Carter Moore (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) claimed 11 face-off wins and controlled a game-high nine ground balls.

Shallow led #5-Cabrini with a pair of goals, while Anthony DiNenno won nine face-offs. Erick Zarnecki made 13 saves in goal as the Cavaliers slip to 1-1 on the season.

The #7-ranked Red Devils improved to 3-0 on the season. They travel to Montclair State University on Saturday for a 3:00 pm face-off.
