Second-Half Surge Powers No. 19 Captains Past Seahawks

St. Mary's City, Md. – First-year midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) recorded her first career hat trick as St. Mary's dropped a 15-7 decision to No. 19 Christopher Newport on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

Newman was the team's leading scorer as she was 2 for 3 in free position shots. Senior captain Emily Shafer (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) helped the Seahawks post a 14-9 advantage in draw controls with a game- and career-best six draw controls while first-year midfielder Lizzie D'Agostaro (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) contributed with team-bests of five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

St. Mary's (1-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead at 23:09 as Newman and first-year attacker Taylor Sartor (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) each found the back of the net. Christopher Newport then put up four unanswered goals for a two-goal cushion at 17:32 as junior attacker Ashton Marshall (Round Hill, Va./Foxcroft School) score twice.

Shafer cut the lead to one with an unassisted tally at 16:32 before the Captains closed out the first half on a 4-2 run for an 8-5 CNU lead at halftime. First-year attacker Elena Obregon (Fairfax Station, Va./W.T. Woodson) netted a hat trick in the Captains' run in the final 12 minutes of the half.

The Captains (2-1) opened up the second stanza with three consecutive goals to 11-5 at 23:00 before back-to-back free position goals by Newman and senior captain Amelia Tenberg (Manchester, Md./Hereford). CNU ended the game with four unanswered goals for the 15-7 final and their second straight win.

Marshall paced the Captain offense with five goals and an assist while junior attacker Jessica Singer (Herndon, Va./Herndon) added two goals and three assists. Junior Emily Johnson (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville District) aided the defense with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and Michelle DiMenna (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) split time in goal for the Seahawks. DiMenna picked up nine stops and three loose ball pickups in the final 48 minutes of the contest. First-year Hanna Slough (Henrico, Va./Mills E. Godwin) notched seven saves and three ground balls for Christopher Newport.

St. Mary's will be back in action this Saturday, March 2 when the Seahawks welcome Virginia Wesleyan College to Seahawk Stadium for a non-conference game at 3:00 pm.
