Waybright Gets 100th Goal as Stevens Rolls by CMSV

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 27, 2013) Senior tri-captain Spencer Waybright (West Hartford, Conn.) scored her 100th career goal and tallied a career-high 10 points to lead Stevens to a 20-3 rout of Mount Saint Vincent Wednesday evening in the season-opener for both teams.

Waybright had five goals, five assists, two draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers, while junior midfielder Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.) had five markers and a game-high eight draw controls.

After coming out slow in the early going, the Ducks received two goals from Rafferty and two more from senior tri-captain Joey Galligan (Burlingame, Calif.) over a span of 2:52 to give Stevens a 4-0 margin 8:48 into the game.

Mount Saint Vincent (0-1) got on the board in the 12th minute before the Ducks ran off seven-straight tallies to open an 11-1 edge with 5:16 left in the first. Rafferty scored the first in the spurt and Waybright notched the next three. Sophomore attack Andrea Dragoni (Easton, Pa.) converted on a free-position attempt, with sophomore midfielder Holly Good (Charleston, S.C.) putting away one of five Waybright assists to put the Ducks up 10-1. Dragoni tacked on the final goal in the run.

The Dolphins stopped the bleeding momentarily with a goal outside the one-minute mark, but Stevens countered with three goals over the final 49 seconds to take a 14-2 edge into the locker room as Waybright, Rafferty and Dragoni netted the three scores.

The Ducks came out in the second period and played solid, possession-heavy lacrosse, receiving goals from Rafferty, Waybright, two from freshman midfielder Jaimie Mastrogiacomo (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), sophomore attack Caitlyn Hughes (Randolph, N.J.) and sophomore attack Bianca Caseiro (Raritan, N.J.). Waybright's second-half score gave her 100 for her career.

Stevens finished with a 44-16 edge in shots and a 28-15 margin in ground balls. The Ducks won 20 of the 25 draw controls in the game and also only committed 12 turnovers.

Sophomore defender Courtney Lee (Brookeville, Md.), Waybright and Galligan all had two caused turnovers, while Dragoni, Hughes, sophomore defender Amanda Ingersoll (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), Waybright, sophomore Gabriela Sanchez (Auburn, N.H.), Galligan, Good and freshman midfielder Melissa Conklin (Pequannock, N.J.) all secured multiple ground balls. Rafferty (eight), Galligan (five), Waybright (two) and Ingersoll (two) led Stevens in the draw control category.

Six different Stevens players had multiple points, led by Waybright's 10, Rafferty's five, Dragoni's three and Caseiro's three.

Senior goalie Meg Collins (Marshfield, Mass.) earned the win in goal, playing the first 30 minutes and making three saves. Junior Sarah Prall (Lansdale, Pa.) and junior Mel Welcome (Winsted, Conn.) split the second half goalkeeping duties, allowing just one goal. Prall tallied five saves.

The Dolphins were led by two goals from sophomore midfielder Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomore goalie Kacie McCormack (Mahopac, N.Y.) who made 14 saves.

Stevens will return to action at Montclair State University on Saturday, March 2 beginning at 12:00 p.m.
