Queens Picks up Conference Win over Coker

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Casey Hock recorded a hat trick and three assists for six points to lead Queens (2-2) past Coker (1-3) this evening at Dickson Field. The Royals defeated the Cobras 14-6 to begin Conference Carolinas play at 1-0. Coker begins league play at 0-1.

After leading 2-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Royals really got going in the second scoring five goals compared to Coker's three. At the half, the Royals led 7-3.

Queens was able to expand their lead to 8, 11-3, scoring four back-to-back by the 6:38 mark. The Cobras would close the third period netting two in the final five minutes to cut Queens' lead to six.

The Royals continued their stellar play on the offensive end in the fourth, beginning with Hock juking two defenders to score at 13:26. Nick Wilkinson was credited with the assist on the play. Coker's Keith LaClair would respond just over a minute later to make the score 12-6, but that was as close as the Cobras would get as Queens found the back of the net twice more over the next two minutes. The Royals then forced the Cobras into five turnovers, while notching four saves in the final 10 minutes of action to secure the victory.

The Royals collected 27 ground balls to Coker's 19 this evening, and won 12 of the 21 face-offs.

T.C. Whaley also recorded three goals, while Bobby Berman added two. Wilkinson finished with two assists. Garret Chan, Evan Farkas, and Jason Krogulski each notched two points. On the defensive end, Dillon Draper and Patrick Murphy combined for nine caused turnovers. Murphy also collected three ground balls. Eric Dolan defended the net, collecting 11 saves and the win.

Steve Marciano and LaClair led the Cobras with two goals apiece. Josh Masciarelli collected seven saves in the loss.

The Royals return to action on Saturday, March 9 at noon at the Queens Sports Complex.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Coker suffered their first Conference Carolinas loss of the season on Wednesday (Feb. 27), losing to Queens University of Charlotte, 14-6.

Trailing 2-0 after the first period, Coker cut the lead in half time a goal from Timothy Smith four minutes into the second period. The Royals regained the two goal advantage just eight seconds later.

The Cobras quickly answered with a goal from Steve Marciano one minute later, making it a 3-2 game. Queens posted three unanswered goals, before John Bretton scored with five minutes left in the period pushing the score to 6-3 in favor of Queens. The Royals added one more goal in the final minutes of the period to make it 7-3 heading to halftime.

Queens started the second half with a quartet of goals, before Marciano and Keith LaClair each scored a goal, making the score 11-5 at the end of the third period. LaClair would add his second goal of the game in the fourth period, as Queens added another three goals for a 14-6 final.

Marciano and LaClair finished the game with two goals and a ground ball each, while Smith had a goal and an assist. Bretton added a goal and Ryan Maurer and Mike Martiello dished out an assist each.

Josh Masciarelli posted seven saves in the net for the Cobras.

Cobras will hit the road to Florida for their next two games. The first game will be on Friday (March 1) at Florida Tech at 7:00 p.m., followed by a game at Tampa on Sunday (March 3) at 1:00 p.m.
