No. 1 LIU Post Dominates Saint Anselm in Season Opener

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. Sophomore Marissa Daly (Marshfield, Mass.) registered four points and classmate Kelly Pickett (Chelmsford, Mass.) tallied three, but Saint Anselm opened the 2013 season with an 18-8 defeat at top-ranked LIU Post on Friday afternoon at Hickox Field.

The Hawks begin the year at 0-1, while the Pioneers the defending national champions move to 1-0.

LIU Post grabbed a 1-0 lead just 27 seconds into the contest when Morgan Chiarenza found the back of the net off a feed from Ashley Olen. Abbie Ross would then double the Pioneers' lead just under two minutes in, but the Hawks roared back with three goals in a span of 2:10 to grab the lead.

Pickett kicked things off at the 26:24 mark when she was set up by Daly. Their classmate Sarah Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) then knotted the game 58 seconds later before senior Carrie Brophy (Mansfield, Mass.) converted a free-position chance to give the Hawks a 3-2 edge nearly six minutes in.

The lead would be short lived, however, as Olen scored 28 seconds later to tie it and then beat freshman goalkeeper Jane Bunn (St. John's, Fla.) again at 16:42 to hand the Pioneers the lead back for good at 4-3. Two more goals from Ross made it a 6-3 game with 14:32 remaining in the opening half.

Daly kept the Hawks in it, however, scoring on a free position with 12:06 to go before adding an unassisted tally 53 seconds later to trim the Saint Anselm deficit to one. Jackie Sileo's third assist of the day set up Brie-Clair Drost, who made it 7-5 with 8:05 to play.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Stazinski (Pembroke, Mass.) beat Pioneer goalkeeper Dominique Mosca to once again make it a one-goal game at the 4:29 mark, but Sileo scored just16 seconds later and Ross added her fourth of the game 35 seconds before the break to send LIU Post into halftime with a 9-6 advantage.

The Pioneers came out of the locker room on a tear, scoring eight straight goals with three from Olen and two apiece from Ross and Chiarenza to widen the gap to 17-6 with 11:38 to play. Pickett potted her second of the day at 9:23 and then set up Daly's third at 8:11 to cut it to 17-8. LIU Post added one more with 2:04 remaining to close the scoring.

Bunn stopped six shots in 45:29 of action in her collegiate debut, while sophomore Allee Ramzi (Cumberland, R.I.) made three saves over the final 14:31 in relief of Bunn. Mosca stopped three shots.

The Pioneers outshot the Hawks, 28-14, including 14-4 in the second stanza. Saint Anselm, meanwhile, captured 17 of 28 draw controls. LIU Post converted its only free-position chance, while the Hawks were 2 for 4 in that category.

The Hawks return to action Sunday, March 3 at 1:00 p.m. when they take on Molloy College. The team opens its home slate Saturday, March 9 at 11:00 a.m. when it plays host to Grand Valley State University at Grappone Stadium.
