No. 13 Washington College Upsets No. 9 Washington & Lee

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior attackman Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) scored three goals and assisted on another to reach 100 career points as host 13th-ranked Washington College defeated visiting ninth-ranked Washington and Lee, 8-4, in a non-conference game this afternoon.

The Shoremen, who broke a four-game losing streak to the Generals with the win, improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Generals fell to 4-1 with the loss.

Neither team scored until 1:52 remained in the first quarter when Cord found junior attackman Jim Cusick (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall) for a goal to put the Shoremen ahead, 1-0.

The Generals evened the score 1:06 into the second quarter on a goal by Mac Means off an assist from Cooper Brown, but Washington regained the lead 1:21 later when senior midfielder Patrick Coyle (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall)scored an unassisted goal. Neither team scored again in the half as Washington junior goalie Ted DiSalvo (Boca Raton, FL/Spanish River) made eight first-half saves and Washington and Lee goalie Warren Berenis made five.

Cord scored three unanswered goals to open the third-quarter scoring and give the Shoremen a 5-1 cushion. He netted unassisted goals with 9:30 and 8:13 on the clock, respectively, and scored off a feed from junior midfielder Kodie Englehart(Coronado, CA/Coronado) with 6:30 to go in the third to become the first Shoreman to reach 100 career points since Kolyn Kirby in 2008.

The Generals rallied as Means scored the next three goals. He scored on back-to-back feeds from Luke Heinsohn with 4:48 and 2:23 remaining in the third, respectively, and then scored off a Cam Lewis assist 1:25 into the fourth quarter to slice the margin to 5-4.

Washington stopped the W&L rally when sophomore midfielder Adam Smith(Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) scored with 10:29 to play in the fourth. Smith then found Cusick, who scored from his knees, to make it 7-4 with 5:18 to go. Junior midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, MD/Franklin) rounded out the scoring with a goal off an assist from junior attackman JD Campbell (Baltimore, MD/Mount St. Joseph) with 3:29 left.

Cusick (two goals) and Smith (one goal, one assist) joined Cord as multiple-point getters for the Shoremen. DiSalvo finished the game with 11 saves for the Shoremen, while sophomore midfielder Michael Trapp (White Plains, NY/White Plains) went 9 for 13 on face-offs with six ground balls. Junior long-stick midfielder Jonny Poe (Coronado, CA/Coronado) added five five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Means led W&L by scoring all four of the Generals' goals. Berenis finished the game with 13 saves for the Generals.

The Shoremen held a 37-35 advantage in shots, won 10 of the game's 15 face-offs, and held a 40-36 advantage in ground balls in the contest.

The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. game at St. Mary's (MD).

CHESTERTOWN, Md. The 13th-ranked Washington College men's lacrosse team used a 4-goal run and a 3-goal run to post an 8-4 win over ninth-ranked Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon at Kirby Stadium.

The Generals (4-1) knotted the score at 1-1 early in the second quarter when senior attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) scored off an assist from senior midfielder Cooper Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) at 13:54. However, the Shoremen (2-0) took the lead back just 1:21 later when senior midfielder Patrick Coyle scored unassisted.

Coyle's goal was the first in a 4-goal run that gave Washington a 5-1 lead with 6:30 left in the third quarter. Senior attackman Bennett Cord scored the final three goals of the run in a span of 3:00.
