No. 11 Catawba Rallies Late but Falls to Lenoir-Rhyne in OT

HICKORY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne scored a man-up goal 24 seconds into overtime to lift the Bears to a 12-11 win over visiting Catawba in Deep South Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Moretz Stadium. The Bears improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the DSC, while the 11th-ranked Catawba Indians drop to 2-2 and 0-1.

Catawba forced overtime with a dramatic finish, erasing a three-goal deficit in the final two minutes. Down 11-8 after Sam Ashton scored for the Bears with 2:38 left, Matt Symes (Coquitlam, BC, CANADA/Centennial HS) scored with 1:39 left and again with just 55 seconds remaining to pull within a goal. Daniel Rew (Forest Hill, MD/Bel Air HS) notched the tying goal with 26 seconds to play.

Rew won the face-off to start the overtime period, but after a turnover the Indians quickly went a man down. The Bears wasted little time capitalizing with a tally from Tyler Kotch to end it. It marked the third man-up goal for LR in the game.

Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a quarter with Kotch scoring the first two goals of the game. Catawba rallied with a pair of second-quarter goals from John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington HS) and won from Adam Hebert (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic HS) to trail 4-3 at the break. Catawba took the lead early in the second half, but the teams would be tied 8-all after three periods to set up the thrilling finish.

Scheich led the Indians with three goals and added two assists. Symes and Tom Cullop (New Windsor, MD/S. Carroll HS) each had a pair of goals. Kotch and Ashton both had three goals for Lenoir-Rhyne. Robert Darrow and Ned Kaish had two goals and two assists.

Lenoir-Rhyne held slight edges in shots (42-39) and ground balls (32-29) with each team winning 13 face-offs. Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Stevenson) made 11 saves for Catawba and Steven McGhee had 11 stops for L-R.

Catawba will next travel to Saint Leo on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. game against the Lions.
