UMass-Boston Nets 7 Unanswered to Top Maine Maritime

WESTON, Mass. -- UMass-Boston broke a 5-5 first quarter deadlock with seven unanswered goals en route to a 14-9 win over Maine Maritime Saturday. The Beacons improved to 1-1, while the Mariners fell to 0-1.

Nick Betti paced Maine Maritime with five goals and added an assist. Bronson Guimond scored twice and Alex Hermes and Thomas Houle each netted one shot. Erik Milles stopped 12 shots in goal for the Mariners.

Pete McNichols led Umass-Boston with a game-high six goals. John Powers netted a hat trick, Donny Delpha scored twice and Dom Fichera, Ryan McGoff and Thomas Petitti each scored one.

Hermes gave the Mariners an early 1-0 lead before a score from Petitti and two by McNichols put the Beacons ahead 3-1 with 5:56 left in the first quarter. Betti put MMA within one, 3-2, before McNichols matched it to get UMB ahead 4-2 with 3:53 left in the opening quarter. Two straight goals from Guimond, and a score by Houle, gave the Mariners a 5-4 lead with 2:08 left in the first. Delpha scored a man-up goal for the Beacons to even the game at 5-5 at the end of the opening quarter.

UMass-Boston scored seven unanswered in the second quarter to lead 12-5 before Hermes found Betti late in the quarter to make it 12-6 at halftime.

McNichols made it 13-6 early in the third before Betti netted two goals to make 13-8. Fichera found the back of the net with 5:05 left in the third for UMB and Betti had the only score of the fourth quarter.

The Mariners return to action Sunday against SUNY Maritime at Massachusetts Maritime. Game time is noon.
