Swarthmore Opens Season with Rout of Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Swarthmore College (1-0) began the 2013 season with a convincing 14-1 victory at Eastern on a chilly March afternoon.

The Garnet dominated from the opening whistle, scoring early and often. Junior Corinne Sommi opened the floodgate of scoring just three minutes into the contest with the team's first goal of the season. Sophomore Sara Lentricchia followed suit only six minutes later, scoring her first of the season.

The Garnet tallied 13 goals in the first half, making the most of good team play and passing, as well as taking advantage of free position shots. The offense was led by senior star Annalise Penikis, who was good for three goals on the day. Penikis added two assists too, bringing her early season point total to eight.

In all, the Garnet had 10 scorers on the day. Senior Nicole Vanchieri, and Lentricchia added two each, while Sommi, senior Beth Martin, sophomore Julia Denney, freshman Nathalie Perry-Free, junior Elyse Tierney, junior Lucy Whitacre, and freshman Lizzie Kolln scoring one each.

The Garnet were efficient passers as well. Many goals came from cutting runs and fantastic feeds, as Penikis and Sommi ended the day with two assist, and sophomore Elizabeth Bachman tallied one.

Eastern goalie Cortney Andes had her hands full all day, but did well to save 16 Garnet shots. Swarthmore dominated in shots, too, with 34 to Eastern's 15. Swarthmore's trio of goalies allowed just one goal for the Eagles, with junior Michele Ammerman, freshman Connie Bowen, and freshman Christine McGinn combining to play superbly.

Swarthmore returns to action March 8th as they face Drew at Clothier Field at 7:00 pm.
