Late 5-0 Run Helps Navy Defeat Richmond

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A late 5-0 run helped the 19th-ranked Navy women's lacrosse team (5-0) defeat visiting Richmond (1-5), 12-8, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Sophomore attacker Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.) scored seven points and sophomore goalie Annie Foky (Charlottesville, Va.) made 11 saves.

"I'm really proud of the team for coming from behind and gaining the victory today," head coach Cindy Timchal said. "Richmond is one of the top teams in the Atlantic 10. They were a tough team and they matched our goals. To get this victory is huge for us and we look forward to this propelling us into our first Patriot League game next weekend."

Navy got behind 2-0 early to Richmond for its first deficit of the season. Richmond grew its lead to 4-2 before Navy reeled off a 5-0 run over five minutes to take a 7-4 lead.

Senior attacker Kathy Young (Berwyn, Pa.) opened the run with a free-position goal and then junior midfielder Jill Coughlin (Annapolis, Md.) swept in a rebound off of junior Aimee Gennaro's (Havertown, Pa.) saved shot right on the doorstep to even the game at 4-4.

After Generi notched her second goal of the first half, senior attacker Jasmine DePompeo (Sayville, N.Y.) caused a turnover right in front of Richmond's goal circle. She then popped the ball up in the air to herself and then swung through in one motion to send the loose ball to the back of the cage.

Young finished the 5-0 run with a great individual effort to break through the Richmond defense for an unassisted tally and a 7-4 lead.

Richmond's Kara Moschetti then brought the Spiders right back into the game, scoring three goals in a 4-0 spurt, which spanned the end of the first half and the first 10 minutes of the second, to take an 8-7 advantage over Navy with 20:22 remaining.

With just under 17 minutes to go, Navy began its second comeback of the game. First, Generi tied the game at 8-8 by finishing a goal that was set up by DePompeo from behind the cage.

Just 51 seconds later Generi returned the favor to DePompeo. Generi sent a high pass to DePompeo who jumped, caught the ball and shot before returning to the turf for what would prove to be the game-winning goal at 16:02.

Senior defender Emily Mellin (Sherwood Forest, Md.) controlled the ensuring draw control and Navy went right down the field to score just 17 seconds later when senior Beth Young (Berwyn, Pa.) set up Generi for her fourth goal of the game.

The Mids continued to cushion their lead with 11:41 to go when Generi backed off a free-position opportunity to feed DePompeo, who was coming around the left side of the circle and beat the Richmond goalie.

Generi would score her fifth goal of the game with 5:35 left off another assist from Beth Young and Foky made a number of saves down the stretch as Navy secured the 12-8 win.
