Garden City, N.Y. - No. 7 Adelphi opened its 2013 campaign with an 8-7 victory over the No. 9 Pioneers of LIU-Post on Saturday afternoon on Motamed Field. With the win, the Panthers improve to 1-0 on the year while the Pioneers drop to 0-1.

The Panthers were led by Salvatore Tuttle and Kevin Kennedy, each over whom tallied three points behind two goals and one assist. Patrick Starke, Jamie McAndrew, Vinny Coiro and Ikerson Hopper all added one goal apiece while Mcandrew, Olson, Joe Celano and Nick Watson added one assist apiece. On defense, Rashad Cureton led the Panthers and scooped up seven ground balls and won six of nine faceoffs while teammate Gregory Puskuldjian handled half of his 10 faceoff attempts. Eric Janssen played all 60 minutes in goal, making 16 saves and allowing just seven to pass him by.

For LIU-Post, Matty Beccaris led all scorers with four points, behind four goals. The Pioneers held a 38-26 advantage in total shots, and also led 23-17 in shots on goal. The Panthers held a narrow 30-26 advantage in ground balls.

The Brown and Gold got on the board first as McAndrew took a pass from Celano into the back of the net just 1:56 into the first quarter. However, the Pioneers answered less than two minutes later as Beccaris scored his first of the day off of an assist from Billy Deignan to tie the game at 1-1.

The Panthers scored two answered goals to conclude the first quarter as Starke put the ball in off an assist from Tuttle at 7:10. Tuttle then knocked in his first of the day with 11 seconds remaining to put the Brown and Gold up 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Adelphi's fourth goal of the day came courtesy of Hopper off of an assist from Watson, giving the Panthers a 4-1 lead at the 10:27 mark in the second quarter. The Pioneers were unable to get anything past Janssen in the frame, as four of his saves came in the second quarter; as a result, the Panthers took a 4-1 lead into halftime.

Conner Drost and Beccaris each scored for the Pioneers to open the third quarter, pulling the visitors within one. However, Cioro took a pass from Kennedy into the net to restore Adelphi's two-goal lead, 5-3, with 9:24 to go. Beccaris and Ryan Slane answered later in the frame to tie the action at 5-5, but Kennedy's first score of the day put Adelphi back on top by one with 3:41 to go.

Beccaris answered with his fourth and final tally of the game to knot the action at 6-6 less than 30 seconds later, and Justin Patterson would find the back of the net on a man-up goal to give Post their first lead, 7-6 with 2:10 remaining. Kennedy's second goal of the contest knotted the action at 7-7 with less than a minute remaining, and the game would enter the fourth quarter tied.

With 10:52 remaining, Tuttle went to cage and fired a shot that beat LIU-Post goalie Tim Bradley to put Adelphi in the lead for good. With time winding down, the Brown and Gold did not allow their Long Island rivals another offensive opportunity to seal the deal on their first victory of the season.

The Panthers return to action at home on Saturday, March 9 for a 12:00 p.m. contest against the #6 NYIT Bears.
