Colorado Mesa Uses 5-0 Run to Down Colorado College

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Sophomore goaltender Zach Weaver made 10 of his 16 saves during the first half to keep Colorado Mesa in the game, setting the stage for a 5-0 run in the third quarter that proved to be the difference in its 11-7 victory over Colorado College on Saturday afternoon at Walker Field.

Sophomore midfielder Henri Halle tied his career high with three goals, but that wasn't enough to prevent the Tigers (2-1) from suffering their first loss of the season.

Halle scored twice in a span of 90 seconds to knot the score at 3-3 after 30 minutes, but freshman midfielder Dylan Duresky's man-up tally 1:51 into the third period put the Mavericks in front to stay. CMU added four more goals, including another by Duresky that proved to be the deciding marker with 3:38 to play in the third period.

Junior midfielder Jack Kreitler, sophomore midfielder Taylor Paul and Halle found the cage during a 3-0 run that saw CC battle back to within 8-6 just seven seconds into the fourth quarter, but the Mavericks answered with tallies from sophomore attackman Michael Beimford and freshman attackman Steve Brandenburg to take a 10-6 lead midway through the frame.

The teams traded scores during the final seven minutes, with Kreitler adding his second of the game to go along with an assist.

Freshman goaltender Chase Murphy stopped 11 shots for the Tigers, his second game of the season with double-digit saves.

Other than the score, the contest was a statistical draw.

Colorado College finished with 39-36 edge in total shots, while Mesa enjoyed a 45-41 difference in ground balls. The Tigers claimed 11 of 21 faceoffs.

Junior attackman Tyler Allen set a career high with 13 ground balls for CC.

Brandenburg led the Mavericks with three goals and an assist. Duresky and junior midfielder Kade Robinson added a pair markers apiece.

Colorado College (2-1) plays at home for the first time next Saturday when Trine University visits Washburn Field at noon.
