Redlands Prevails over Carthage in Snowy Showdown

University of Redlands capped off its spring-break trip with a snowy victory in Sewanee, TN, against Bulldog-coached Carthage College (WI) on Saturday. Refusing to let the wintry weather discourage them, the Bulldogs rattled off nine consecutive goals en route to the 11-6 triumph over the Lady Reds.

After Carthage jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than seven minutes into the action, the Bulldogs held their opponents scoreless through the end of the period while firing off six straight goals. Freshman midfielder Stephanie Garrett (San Diego, CA) initiated the comeback rally with an unassisted goal at the 22:10-mark, which came off a deflected free-position shot by sophomore midfielder Emily Dalrymple (Snohomish, WA).

Less than 30 seconds later, the Bulldogs orchestrated the tying goal after junior midfielder Allison Leipzig (Newton, MA) collected the important draw control. Senior midfielder Crystal Painter (Lake George, NY) found senior attack player Aimee Dewan (Alamo, CA) for Redlands' second score of the game.

With 18:09 left in the opening stanza, junior attack player Allie Hoffler (Draper, UT) put the Maroon and Gray in front for the first time when she received a pass from Painter. This scoring run began on the other end when graduate student goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) made a stop before initiating a successful clear from the Bulldogs' defensive third.

Beginning at the 15:48-mark, Redlands notched back-to-back scores in a 21-second span. Dewan took a pass from sophomore attack player Elizabeth Keilty (Yorba Linda, CA) on the first one, before Painter converted a free-position opportunity.

From here, neither team successfully found the back of the net for nearly 15 minutes. Garrett ended the drought by firing one past the Carthage goalkeeper to make it 6-2 for the Bulldogs with 1:11 remaining in the period.

Redlands continued to apply the offensive pressure by opening the second stanza with three straight goals for a 9-2 lead. During this seven-minute spurt, junior midfielder KK McCaslin (Portland, OR), Garrett, and sophomore midfielder Robin Taylor (Poway, CA) recorded netters for the Maroon and Gray.

However, the Lady Reds answered back with a hat trick of their own, cutting the deficit to four with 3:22 left on the clock.

Nonetheless, the Maroon and Gray tacked on scores from junior midfielder Molly Eckert (Houston, TX) and Garrett, and allowed just one, resulting in the 11-6 triumph over Carthage.

Junior midfielder Jacky Craycraft (Trabuco Canyon, CA) provided four draw controls as the Bulldogs nabbed a total of 13, compared to Carthage's six.

Martinez recorded four saves in her seventh win of the campaign.

The Lady Reds (0-1), who are coached by former Bulldog players, Lauren Hume and Amy Gulbranson, gained three goals from Olivia Nino and two scores from Natalie Ceis. Ali Gorman notched 14 saves for Carthage in its season-opener.

Redlands (7-1) returns to Southern California for a four-game stretch at home against non-conference foes, beginning with Susquehanna University (PA) on March 6 at 7:00 p.m.
