Grizzlies Open 2013 with Loss Against Fort Lewis

ALAMOSA, Colo. - Adams State hosted their home and season-opener of 2013 against the Fort Lewis Skyhawks on Saturday afternoon. The game started off well for the Grizzlies as they scored three minutes in on a Lexy Hamilton (Monte Vista, Colo.) free position shot. However, the Skyhawks came back with three goals to take a 3-1 lead at half en-route to a 10-4 WILA win.

With the win, Fort Lewis moves to 2-1 overall and in the WILA.

With the half-time advantage, Fort Lewis scored three additional goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half to pull ahead 6-1. The Grizzlies then came back as Amanda Hisel (Conifer, Colo.) and Heather Jones (Littleton, Colo.) scored second half goals to break the momentum and pull the Grizzlies within 6-3. However, Fort Lewis scored four more times in a matter of less than six minutes to put the game away.

Megan Daly (Walnut Creek, Calif.) then scored the last goal for the Grizzlies with 31 seconds left in the game. Jones and freshman Qiana Barfield (Denver, Colo.) had one assist each for ASU.

Fort Lewis' Jam Vertner scored three goals, while Kathryn Dunn and Kylie Smith both scored two for the winners. Ally Kvidera also scored a goal and finished with three assists for the Skyhawks, who out-shot the Grizzlies, 31-14.

ASU sophomore Danica Kristiansen (Lake Forest, Calif.) was busy in the net making 13 saves, 12 more than the Skyhawks' Alyssa Spencer.

Defensively, Julia Gramlich (Monument, Colo.) had four caused turnovers and four groundballs while Kristiansen led the Grizzlies with five groundballs.

The Grizzlies struggled with penalties, accounting for seven total yellow cards and one red card.

ASU will return to action on Monday against Lake Erie (Ohio) in Grand Junction, Colo. This will be the first game of the season for the Storm. The first draw is at 5:00 p.m.
