Nor'easters Start 2013 with One-Goal Win Over Wheaton

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Mike Allan (Billerica, Mass.) and sophomore Geoff Bruno (Durham, Conn.) scored goals late to lift University of New England to a 9-8 non-conference victory over Wheaton College (Mass.) on Saturday (Mar. 2) at the Big Blue Turf.

It was the third straight win for the Nor'easters (1-0) over the Lyons (0-1).

After Wheaton sophomore Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass.) notched his game-high third marker of the day to put his side up (8-7) with four minutes left to play, Allan and Bruno responded at 3:24 and 2:20, respectively, to switch the advantage.

The Lyons managed two shots with a chance to tie; both were blocked in front.

UNE led by no more than one goal the entire way, in a match that featured six ties and four lead changes.

Allan and juniors Dan O'Gorman (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and Pat Wolfe (Phippsburg, Maine) had two goals apiece for Big Blue, while Bruno, senior Tyler Thomas (Mount Pleasant, N.Y.), and first-year Sam Cloutier (Lewiston, Maine) recorded the others.

O'Gorman added an assist, 11 ground balls, and a 9 of 14 showing at the face-off X to his performance. Thomas dished out three assists to end with a team-high four points.

Defensively, senior Jay Letendre (Southington, Conn.) posted nine stops between the pipes for the Nor'easters, and classmate Nick McMahon (Westfield, Mass.) had three caused turnovers.

Hillman finished with five points to pace Wheaton and sophomore Sean Finn (Kennebunk, Maine) chipped in with a pair of scores. Junior netminder Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I.) made 17 saves in defeat.

UNE returns to action on Thursday ( 4:00 p.m.) with a home date against the University of Southern Maine. Wheaton visits UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday.
