Rollins Takes Deep South Triumph over Wingate

Winter Park, Fla. - Rollins made an 8-2 run spanning the second and third quarters en route to a 10-4 DSC victory over Wingate on Sunday afternoon at Barker Family Stadium on the RC campus. Rollins is 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the DSC. Wingate is 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the DSC.

Rollins junior midfield Chris Ross (Lawrenceville, N.J.) led the Tars with two goals and one assist. RC freshman midfield Morgan Baker (Dummerston, Vt.) tallied two goals. Tar freshman goalkeeper Hunt Bartram (Darien, Conn.) earned his first collegiate victory. He allowed four goals and collected a career-high 19 saves.

Wingate senior midfield Chase Clifton (Lexington, N.C.) and freshman attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) had two goals each for the visiting Bulldogs. Two Bulldog goalkeepers played 30 minutes each. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Patrick Cooney (Cazenovia, N.Y.) surrendered five goals and notched five saves in the first half, while sophomore net minder Travis Price (Greensboro, N.C.) had the exact same numbers in the second half.

Rollins led 1-0 after the first quarter, thanks to a Baker goal with 64 seconds left in the frame. The Tars won the second quarter opening face-off and scored seven seconds into the stanza (14:53) when sophomore attack Will Diamond (Delray Beach, Fla.) found the back of the nets.

Vogrig cut the Bulldog deficit in half when he scored on an assist from senior midfield/attack Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) at the 9:11 mark of the second quarter. Rollins answered when Ross and senior attack Austin Ricci (Winter Park, Fla.) scored extra-man goals 21 seconds apart. Ricci's goal made the score 4-1 Tars with 6:40 to play in the second.

Ross found freshman attack Riley Robinson (Costa Mesa, Calif.) for a goal at the 6:12 mark to give the hosts a 5-1 lead. Clifton scored the first of his two goals with 3:58 to play in the second quarter, making the halftime score 5-2 Rollins.

Baker and Clifton traded goals to start the third quarter; Clifton's second tally trimmed the Wingate deficit to 6-3 with 8:01 left in the third frame. Rollins responded with a 4-0 flurry to finish the 8-2 run. Four different players contributed one goal each to the run. The Tars led 10-3 entering the fourth quarter.

Vogrig scored the only goal of the fourth quarter, taking an assist from freshman midfield Robert Godwin (Greensboro, N.C.) at the 12:22 mark. Vogrig's 12 goals this season are second on the Wingate team charts.

The Bulldogs outshot the Tars 38-29. Wingate held a 23-20 edge in shots on goal. Rollins scored two extra-man goals in three tries; Wingate was scoreless in three EMO opportunities. The Bulldogs tallied one short-handed goal. Rollins held slim advantages in face-offs won (11-7) and ground balls (34-31).

Wingate faces DSC opponent Tampa Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. Rollins entertains Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
