Queens Picks up Non-Conference Win Over Lions

MISENHEIMER, N.C. Queens University of Charlotte (4-3) picked up a 12-8 non-conference win over Saint Leo University this afternoon at Dickson Field. The Lions dropped to 0-4 on the season with the loss.

Attacker Maggie Masters led the Royals' offense with five points after recording a hat trick and two assist. She also totaled two ground balls, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Arika Zimmerman completed the game with two goals and an assist, along with two ground balls, two caused turnovers and one draw control. Brittany Barnwell led the Royals in draw controls with four, while also netting two goals. Brittany Larranaga also scored twice.

Queens scored four goals in the first 16 minutes of the opening half, but turnovers would stifle the Royals' attack for the remainder of the period. During that time, the Lions found some offense netting two goals within nine seconds of each other. At the break, Queens led 4-2.

Masters would get Queens going in the second, connecting on a free-position-shot at 28:33. Paige Leggio would cut Queens lead back down to two a few minutes later, but the Royals' attack got hot scoring four in a row for a 9-3 advantage. With 17:55 to play, the Lions made a four point push to close the margin back to two, 9-7, with 9:36 on the clock. The Royals would hold strong, outscoring Saint Leo, 3-1, in the final minutes of regulation for the win.

Queens outshot Saint Leo 27-23, and the battle for draw controls was even at 11-11. Danielle Horoschak of Queens collected 12 saves in goal.

Stephanie Marran of Saint Leo finished the day with four goals and one assist to lead the Lions. She also led all on the field with six draw controls. Joanna Chadwick recorded a hat trick.

Queens will travel to face Belmont Abbey College on March 13 at 3:00 p.m.
