Raffaele Stops 14 in Wolves' Victory at Converse

SPARTANBURG - Led by a trio of two-goal performances, Newberry escaped the campus of Converse with a 10-7 victory over the Valkyries on Monday afternoon.

Newberry (2-3) opened the scoring at Hayden Abney Fulp Field less than a minute into the game as sophomore Victoria Thomas (Manhattan, Kan.) broke through the Converse (2-5) defense and gathered a pass from fellow sophomore Tessa Davis (Triangle, Va.) and converted her third goal of the season.

Davis tallied another assist less than a minute after she collected he first, when she found freshman Noelle Allen (Lawrenceville, Ga.) for the Wolves' second goal of the game. Converse answered shortly after Allen's first goal, by scoring back-to-back goals to tie the game at 2-2.

After a ground ball pickup by freshman Jessica Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.), Davis picked up her third assist of the day as freshman Carly Marksberry (Lawrenceville, Ga.) scored with 24:13 remaining in the first half. Neither team was able to get much going over the next ten minutes until Sydnie Hickey scored the Valkyries third goal of the afternoon, to tie the game at 3-3.

Newberry regained the lead on the next possession and never looked back, as the Wolves led for the remainder of the game after Allen's second goal of the game and seventh of the season on a fourth assist from Davis.

The final 12 minutes of the first half proved uneventful as Allen's goal was the final of the half putting the Wolves ahead of Converse 4-3 at halftime.

Newberry started the second half in the same fashion it started the first half, as Baxtrom struck with a quick goal to extend the Newberry lead to 5-3. After Converse answered Baxtrom's goal with a free position goal, Newberry's leading scorer junior Kerri Ann Barlage (Glen Burnie, Md.) joined in on the scoring action. Barlage's goal with 23:52 remaining in the game, gave Newberry a 6-4 lead.

On the next possession, with the Valkyries down a man, Newberry scored once again as sophomore Elise Sanchez (Tujunga, Calif.) scored her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Marksberry. A response of two straight Converse goals, turned into a back-to-back attack by the Wolves as Barlage scored the eventual game winner with 14:33 remaining. After Barlage's 12th goal of the season, Davis tallied her sixth of the year to give the Wolves a 9-6 lead.

Less than a minute after Davis' goal, the Valkyries scored their final goal of the game as Brianna Hoffman cut the Wolves' lead to 9-7.

On a free position opportunity with 1:11 remaining, Marksberry scored the Wolves' 10th and final goal of the day.

Barlage, Marksberry and Allen finished the afternoon with two goals each, while Davis recorded four assists. Barlage led the Wolves with five ground balls and earned two draw controls along with Thomas to lead Newberry.

Newberry's freshman goalkeeper Morgan Raffaele (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) picked up her second career victory as she posted a 14 save performance.

Newberry returns home on Wednesday when the Wolves host the Urbana Blue Knights at 4:00 p.m. on the turf of Setzler Field.
