No. 8 Shoremen Rally from 4 Down, Nip No. 20 Seahawks in OT

St. Mary's City, Md. Senior midfielder Patrick Coyle (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) scored 11 seconds into the extra period to lift No. 20 Washington College, 13-12, over No. 20 St. Mary's in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.

Coyle picked up the ground ball after Washington won the first face-off in overtime, ran it down the left side of the field, and fired into the top right corner over the left shoulder of first-year goalkeeper Joey Casey (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) for the sudden victory goal.

Senior attackman Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) paced the St. Mary's offense with three goals and two assists while sophomore midfielder Will Lerch (Lothian, Md./Calverton) tallied three points on two goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Taylor Cook (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and first-year attackman Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) each contributed three points as well on a goal and two assists.

Washington (3-0) edged the Seahawks, 2-1, in the first quarter before St. Mary's responded with a 5-3 run in the second period to post a 6-5 halftime advantage. Five different players found the back of the net for the Seahawks in the second stanza. St. Mary's outshot the Shoremen, 21-10, in the first half while winning 8 of 13 face-offs.

Senior attackman Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) commanded the Shoremen attack with game-highs of four goal and three assists for seven points while junior midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) added two goals and two assists.

The two teams traded goals to start of the third quarter before the Seahawks scored three goals in a three-minute span to stake a 10-6 advantage. Nowicki stopped the SMCM run with an unassisted goal with 29 seconds left in the third.

Sophomore attackman Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) returned a four-goal cushion to St. Mary's at 13:41 in the fourth period as he completed a pass from Mull. Cord then sparked a 3-0 Washington run with two goals and an assist to pull his team within 11-10 at 6:52. Lerch contained the run with his second tally of the day at 4:02 for the 12-10 SMCM lead. Two Shoremen goals in a 36-second span sent the game into overtime.

Senior Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) tallied a 15 of 27 showing at face-off X while scooping up nine ground balls. Senior Justin Harty (Medford Lakes, N.J./Camden Catholic) contributed defensively with three caused turnovers and three ground ball pickups.

Casey finished the game with 13 stops, one ground ball and one caused turnover while junior Ted DiSalvo (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) made seven saves for the Washington win.

The Seahawks will look to return to the win column this Saturday, March 9 when St. Mary's travels to Allentown, Pennsylvania to take on Muhlenberg College in a non-conference contest at 1:00 pm.

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - Senior midfielder Patrick Coyle (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) scored the game-winning goal just 11 seconds into overtime as visiting #8 Washington College rallied from an 11-7 fourth quarter deficit to top host #20 St. Mary's (MD), 13-12, in overtime in a non-conference contest at Seahawk Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Shoremen improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Seahawks fall to 2-2 on the year.

Coyle secured the groundball off the faceoff and went to goal and his shot beat Seahawks' goalie Joey Casey for the walk-off goal to complete the four-goal comeback for Washington as the Shoremen trailed 11-7 with 13:41 left in regulation.
