Hartwick Downed at Oneonta State

ONEONTA, NY Hartwick dropped a 20-5 decision to local rival Oneonta State on Tuesday afternoon on the Red Dragons' home turf. An eight-goal run for Oneonta over a 20:33 span in the first half would give the hosts an insurmountable advantage. In the second half, the Hawks closed the gap to seven, 12-5, after three straight tallies, but the Red Dragons scored the game's final eight goals for the win.

Hartwick slips to 1-2 overall with the loss. Oneonta State improves to 1-0 as the game marked the Red Dragons' season opener.

Senior Kate O'Shea (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and freshman Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) each scored twice in the game for 'Wick. Freshman Ally Naja (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) also tallied for the Hawks on the day. Goalkeeper Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) recorded a career-best 16 saves in the contest.

For Oneonta State, Kiera McNally (6g, 2a) and Caroline Tully (5g, 2a) combined for 11 goals and four assists. Jillian Donodeo added three goals and one helper.

The Red Dragons would strike first 4:07 into the game, but Naja would find the net 28 seconds later to even the score for Hartwick. Just 30 seconds after Naja's goal, McNally scored her first of the season and Oneonta would lead for the rest of the day.

The hosts would score three times in 53 seconds to increase their lead and they netted three more before 11 minutes remained in the first half. Hartwick scored a man-up goal from Ference at 1:17 to pull to within seven, but two Red Dragons goals in the final 66 seconds made the score 11-2 at the half.

After an early SUCO score in the second half, the Hawks fought back with three straight goals in a 2:53 span. Ference scored her second of the day and O'Shea tallied twice in 1:03 to trim the deficit to 12-5.

Neither team found the net for the next four minutes before two quick SUCO strikes 48 seconds apart all but eliminated any chance of a Hawks' comeback. The Red Dragons would add six more goals over the final 18 minutes.

Oneonta held a 47-13 edge in shots and a 28-6 advantage in ground balls. The Red Dragons edged out the Hawks in draw controls, 15-12.

O'Shea and sophomore Jackie Moynihan (West Islip, NY/West Islip) each secured three draws for 'Wick. Luce and Moynihan each had a pair of ground balls.

Donodeo registered a game-high five ground balls for SUCO. Casey Sarle grabbed nine draw controls.

The Hawks are back home this Saturday against another SUNYAC foe. 'Wick will host SUNY New Paltz at Wright Stadium beginning at 3:00 p.m.
