No. 3 Cortland Handles the Herons in Red Dragons' Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. No. 3 Cortland used balanced scoring to defeat William Smith, 15-5, Tuesday afternoon in its season opener at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons are now 1-0, while the Herons dropped to 0-2.

Sophomore Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) led Cortland with two goals and two assists, and freshman Erica Geremia (Camillus/West Genesee) contributed two goals and one assist. Senior Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa), junior Taylor Robinson (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) and freshman Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) each scored twice. Seniors Natalie Melaniff (Wantagh) and Taylor Harney (Patchogue/Patchogue-Medford), junior Taylor Reh (Miller Place) and sophomores Chelsea Martin (Ogdensburg/Ogdensburg Free Academy) and Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) netted one goal apiece, while junior Liz Beville (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) chipped in with two assists.

Senior goalie Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) made five saves and allowed four goals in 56 minutes, 53 seconds before giving way to freshman Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's), who did not register a save over the final 3:07. Junior Jessica Lavelle (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded a game-high five ground balls and added two caused turnovers. Monaghan compiled six draw controls, while Hayes-Hurley had three.

Senior Kathleen Ragan (Topsfield, MA/Masconomet) paced the William Smith offense with three goals. Freshmen Hannah Connolly (Watertown/Immaculate Heart) and Meg Hannan (Syracuse/CBA) each scored once and sophomore Katie Sipple (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) picked up an assist.

Freshman Marina Guigli (Wellesley, MA) started in goal, making four saves in the first half. Freshman Allie O'Hara (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) turned aside three shots in the second half. Sophomore Rachel Hughes (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) registered a team-best four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Guigli and sophomore Hayley Braun (Marblehead, MA) recorded three ground balls apiece, and senior Katie Dexter (Bedford/Fox Lane) won three draw controls.

Cortland took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Campese at 28:13 and Geremia at 25:14. Connolly cut the lead to 2-1 at the 12:21 mark before the Red Dragons ended the half on a 5-0 run to take a 7-1 lead into the break. Five different players netted unassisted goals during the streak.

Cortland took control of the game by scoring the first five goals of the second half for a 12-1 lead with 18:00 remaining. Again, five separate players found the back of the net. The Herons responded with three straight goals, two by Ragan, to close the gap to 12-4 at 8:52. Beville then set up scores by Monaghan and Harney and Reh netted an unassisted goal to make it 15-4 before Ragan completed the scoring with her third of the game with 46 seconds remaining.

No. 3 Cortland scored five straight goals to close out the first half with a 7-1 lead and went on to defeat William Smith 15-5 in a non-league game played this afternoon in Cortland, N.Y. It was the Herons second game of the season and their second nationally ranked opponent.

Marilyn Farrell led Cortland with two goals and two assists in the Red Dragons' season opener. Erica Geremia chipped in two goals and an assist. Tara Monaghan, Taylor Robinson and Gina Campese each added two goals. Monaghan also came up with a game-high six draws. Jessica Lavelle scooped up a game-high five ground balls. Shauna Hutchinson played the opening 56:53 in goal for Cortland and made five saves. Liz Ingalls came in for the final 3:07.
