No. 3 Cortland Handles the Herons in Red Dragons' Opener

Senior Kathleen Ragan led the Herons (0-2) with three goals. Sophomore Rachel Hughes grabbed five ground balls and caused two turnovers. Senior Katie Dexter won a team-high three draws. First-year Marina Guigli played the opening 30 minutes and made four saves. Classmate Allie O'Hara saw her first collegiate action, playing the final 30 minutes, and made three saves.

Campese started the scoring for the Red Dragons at 1:47. Geremia made it 2-0 after a feed from Farrell. First-year Hannah Connolly put the Herons on the board at 12:21. With 9:20 left in the half, Campese started a 5-0 run for Cortland. Farrell chipped in two goals.

The Red Dragons continued their run, starting off the second half with five more goals. Farrell tallied a goal and an assist in the stretch, as Cortland took a 12-1 lead 12 minutes into the second. William Smith scored three straight goals to make it 12-4.

Ragan notched back-to-back tallies and first-year Meg Hannan scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from sophomore Katie Sipple. The Red Dragons responded with three goals of their own to stretch their lead to 15-4. Liz Beville earned two assists in the spurt. With 46 seconds left in the game, Ragan tallied her third of the night. She shares the team-high with four goals this season.

Cortland held a 30-18 advantage in shots and a 15-7 lead in draws. The Herons held an 18-15 lead in ground balls. William Smith was successful on 10 of 20 clear attempts, while the Red Dragons went 12 for 16.

The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, March 9 when they travel to take on Nazareth in another non-league game at noon.
