Spartans' Comeback Comes up Short vs. Keene State

CASTLETON, Vt. Castleton's second-half comeback came up short as the Spartans dropped a 12-10 decision to Keene St. to Wednesday evening at Spartan Stadium.

It was tied 6-6 at the half, but the Owls went on a 5-1 run midway through the second half to take control and improve to 1-1 on the season. Lauren Brown had herself a day for Keene St., scoring five goals and dishing off a pair of assists.

Kate Auer led the Castleton offense with three goals and two assists. Amanda Flodstrom scored a hat trick as well, while Samantha Bonasera recorded two assists and had a team-high three caused turnovers.

The Owls jumped out a 1-0 lead, but goals by Sarah Clark and Jessica Taplin gave the Spartans a 2-1 advantage at 20:49. Polly Grey tied it up two minutes later for Keene St.

Auer pushed Castleton in front with her first goal of the season at 17:50 and Flodstrom made it 4-2 50 seconds later. With 11 minutes left in the half, Mariah Lesure made a nifty move around two defenders to the middle of the field for the 5-2 lead.

Lauren Brown cut the Spartans lead to 5-3, but Brandi Whittemore scored off an assist from Auer to make it 6-3 with 8:18 remaining. However, the Owls came back to score the final three goals of the half, with the last two from Brown.

In the second, Auer opened the scoring just 1:27 in to give Castleton a 7-6 lead. Keene St. responded with back-to-back goals over the next five minutes before Flodstrom tied it up 8-8 with 23:08 remaining.

The Owls countered with three straight scores to take an 11-8 advantage. Auer ended the run at 7:02, but Eliza Witherbee responded at 1:51 to make it a three-goal game once again. Flodstrom concluded the scoring with just 53 seconds remaining for the 12-10 final.

Freshman Meghan Els was strong in net, making 12 saves while allowing 12 goals in 60 minutes. Her counterpart Erin Taylor record 10 saves on 16 shots.

Castleton drops to 0-2 on the season and returns to action on Saturday when the Spartans host Western Connecticut St. at 2:00 pm.
