Rangers Fall to Montclair State in Overtime

MADISON, N.J. (March 6, 2013) Montclair St. (2-0) scored four of the game's final five goals in a 15-14 overtime victory over Drew this afternoon. Kelly Schoneveld netted the game-winner with 2:34 remaining in the overtime period.

Drew (2-1) went up 13-12 midway through the second half thanks to a pair of scores by sophomore Krysta Cento. Montclair St. notched the next three goals including the fourth and fifth goals of the day by Jenna Bussiere to put the Red Hawks up 14-13 with 4:30 remaining in the game. Junior Alexandra Mattiace (Montville, N.J./Montville Twp.) ended the Red Hawk run, scoring a game-tying goal off a pass from Nikki Kleiman (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) with 1:29 left in regulation.

The only shot of the overtime period came off the stick of Schoneveld who drove up the right side of the field and scored the eventual game-winning goal.

Kleiman powered the Ranger offense, totaling nine points, the second most ever in one game by a women's lacrosse player. Kleiman scored six goals, all in the first half, and assisted on three others. In three games Kleiman had netted 15 goals including six, twice. She also scooped up a team-high six draw controls and three ground balls.

Cento put together another big game for the Rangers, scoring four times and recording two assists. She tracked down two ground balls and a draw control. Junior Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.) was the other multiple-goal scorer for Drew, finding the back of the net twice.

For Montclair, Schoneveld totaled four goals and picked up a game-high five ground balls. Reigning Skyline Conference Player of the week, Kailee Beal netted a hat trick and came up with four ground balls.

The Rangers who fell in a 3-1 hole early, went into halftime with a 10-7 lead. Both squads shot exactly 34 shots and the Rangers won the turnover battle, 20-17. The Red Hawks struggled on free position shots, converting only 4 of 14 while the Rangers scored eight times in 13 attempts.

Drew goalkeeper CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) made nine saves and picked up three ground balls. Montclair St. netminder, Tiffani Henderson, made three stops to earn her second victory of the season.

The Rangers will be on the road on Friday when they take on Swarthmore. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
