No. 10 Pfeiffer Holds off Late Rally by Colorado Mesa

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Pfeiffer, ranked #10 in the latest USILA Coaches' poll, used a six-goal second quarter and held off a late rally by visiting Colorado Mesa to claim a 12-10 victory in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon. The Falcons improve to 5-1 overall on the year while sending the Mavericks to 1-2.

A slow start for both teams saw Pfeiffer take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter as Spencer Allen (Edmonton, ALBERTA) get on the board first 2:16 into the contest while the Mavericks Kade Robinson (Williamstown, AUSTRALIA) netted the equalizer two-and-a-half minutes later. Elliot Gilbert's (Corning, NY) unassisted goal with 2:22 remaining in the period gave the Falcons their one-goal lead after 15 minutes of action.

After Robinson made it a 2-2 game with a man-up goal at the 11:56 mark of the second, Kory Lutes (Orlando, FL) would reel off the next two goals for Pfeiffer, one in a man-up situation, to put the hosts back up a pair. After James Shepherd (St. John, NEW BRUNSWICK) hit for the Falcons, Michael Beimford (Centennial, CO) stopped the bleeding for the Mavericks with a man-up goal with 4:11 remaining in the second. Pfeiffer's Robert Hope (Peterborough, ONTARIO), Gilbert and Matt Michaeli (Draper, UT) would each find the back of the net again during the final 3:49 to give Pfeiffer an 8-3 lead at the break.

Colorado Mesa would start their comeback out-scoring the Falcons 4-2 in the third as Beimford hit again three minutes in while Steve Brandenburg (Seal Beach, CA) and Dylan Duresky (Aurora, CO) each tallied a goal after Gilbert registered another goal for the Falcons. A Jeff Konko (Rochester, NY) goal with 1:59 left in the period got the lead back to four at 10-6 until Brandenburg found the back of the net with 12 seconds remaining in the period to give the Mavericks momentum heading into the fourth quarter down 10-7.

Just 10 seconds into the fourth, Josh Russell (Denver, CO) continued the momentum with his first of the day before Lutes gave Pfeiffer a little breathing room pushing the lead back to three at 11-8. With 10:01 remaining, Duresky scored a man-up goal to make it 11-9 before Russell hit again just under four minutes later as the Mavericks had trimmed a five-goal deficit down to just one with 6:44 remaining. Solid defense by the Falcons and a final goal by Michaeli with 50 ticks left would seal the deal as Pfeiffer held on 12-10.

Lutes and Gilbert would lead all scorers on the day with three goals apiece while all 10 Mavericks goals went to five different players. Hayden Kirk (Farmingdale, NY) made 11 saves in net for the Falcons including four in the fourth while Brad Bradenburg (Seal Beach, CA) turned away 16 with half of those in the third to keep Colorado Mesa in it.

Pfeiffer will get back to action on Saturday hosting another west coast team in Dominican out of California at 1:00 p.m.
