No. 3 Red Dragons Scorch Union for Second Victory

CORTLAND, N.Y. Freshman Erica Geremia (Camillus/West Genesee) led third-ranked Cortland with nine points on three goals and six assists as the Red Dragons defeated Union, 18-6, Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.

Geremia was one of 10 Cortland goal scorers in the game. Senior Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) netted four goals, senior Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) scored three times and junior Taylor Reh (Miller Place) added two goals. Junior Liz Beville (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt), sophomore Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) and freshman Alex Fritz (Armonk/Byram Hills) each recorded one goal and one assist, while junior Taylor Robinson (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) and freshmen Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) and Amelia Taylor (Seaford) netted one goal apiece. Sophomore Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) contributed two assists.

Senior Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) started in the cage for Cortland (2-0), making eight saves and allowing four goals in 49 minutes, 51 seconds. Freshman Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's) played the next 6:34, and freshman Andrea Moore (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) took the field for the final 3:35. Hayes-Hurley recorded six draw controls, and sophoimore Chelsea Martin (Ogdensburg/Ogdensburg Free Academy) added three. Di Fato collected four ground balls, and junior Jessica Lavelle (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) had three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Sophomore Emily McGrail (Westwood, MA) led the Dutchwomen (0-1) with two goals and one assist. Sophomore Haley Gould (Prides Crossing, MA/Governor's Academy) netted two goals, senior Brittany Fraser (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) and sophomore Ciara Dudeck (Longmeadow, MA) scored once and senior Heather Fraser (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) and freshmen Maggie Comiskey (Garden City/Sacred Heart Academy) and Michele Guyette (Winchester, MA) chipped in with one assist each.

Sophomore goalie Kim Grinhaus (Scarsdale) made nine saves. McGrail also contributed four draw controls and two caused turnovers, while Heather Fraser led the team with three ground balls.

Cortland took a quick 3-0 lead just 1:30 into the game as Geremia assisted on goals by Di Fato and Monaghan and scored once herself. After Brittany Fraser cut the lead to 3-1 at 27:15, the Red Dragons ran off eight straight goals for an 11-1 lead with 5:04 left in the half. Geremia and Campese each notched a pair of goals during the streak. Gould's first of the game ended the run and Cortland led, 11-2 at the break.

Cortland pushed its lead to 15-2 with the first four goals of the second half as Di Fato scored twice and Geremia picked up three more assists. The Dutchwomen then scored three of the next four goals to make it a 16-5 game with 9:00 remaining. Reh and Beville followed with back-to-back goals for Cortland before McGrail completed the scoring with a free-position goal with 12 seconds remaining for the final of 18-6.
