Hood Falls to Neumann in Thriller

FREDERICK, Md.-Hood (1-5) was defeated 10-8 in a thrilling contest by Neumann (1-4) Friday afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field. It was a back and forth affair all game with the outcome not decided until the final seconds.

With the Blazers trailing 8-6 senior attacker Joey O'Hara scored his team leading eighth goal of the season and second of the day to bring Hood to within one goal with just 6 minutes remaining. Ron Lassiter countered with a goal for Neumann with just over two minutes to go to put Hood's chances into serious doubt.

The Blazers responded in the form of freshman Zachary Speights, whose goal just seconds later had Hood within one again at 9-8 with under two minutes remaining. Neumann answered once more on Ian Coyle's third goal with just 50 seconds on the clock. His strike proved to be the deciding blow, but Hood showed great fight and determination in trying to complete the comeback.

Senior midfielder Adam Patterson had a superb game for the blue and grey with a goal and two assists to his name. Patterson was constantly involved in the midfield and his counter attacking prowess led directly to three Blazer goals. Patterson also tied for the team lead in groundballs with seven.

The Blazer defense also had a hand in some of Hood's goals with junior Mark Filuta and sophomore James Weger each scoring their second goals of the season. Senior George Gambrell also had a stellar game, as he had seven groundballs and a team leading six caused turnovers in defeat.

Sophomore Chris Wilbur and senior Alex Engler rounded out the scoring for the Blazers with a goal apiece. Neumann was led by Coyle and Ryan O'Kane, who each scored three goals off the bench for the Knights.
