Swarthmore Sneaks Past Drew in Non-Conference Play

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College improved to 2-0 on the season with 9-8 victory over Drew University (2-2) on Friday evening from Clothier Field.

Tied at 8-all with 4:59 to play in the game, junior Corrine Sommi tallied the game-winning goal with an unassisted break. Sommi finished the game with two goals, three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Senior Annalise Penikis led the Garnet with four goals and one assist. Sophomore Elyse Tierney notched two goals in the winning effort.

Nikki Kleiman led the Rangers with four goals and one assist on a team-best six shots on goal.

Drew went ahead 3-1 at 13:23 - scoring three unanswered goals - before Swat returned the favor with three of its own to regain the lead.

With one second on the clock, Drew was awarded a free position shot in which Kleiman prevailed to knot the score at 4-4 heading into the break.

The teams traded goals for most of the second half with the Garnet tying the game at 8-all after a free position goal from sophomore Sara Lentricchia with 6:57 remaining.

Swarthmore outshot the visitors 38-15, but the Rangers placed 12 shots on goal and eight slipped passed the Garnet keepers. The Garnet prevailed on 13 of 18 draws with Penikis claiming a game-high four.

Despite making 20 saves between the pipes, Rangers keeper CC Carlini was credited with the loss. Michelle Ammerman played the first 30 minutes for the Garnet, making two stops, while freshman Connie Bowen collected her first collegiate victory with two saves in the final 30 minutes.

Swarthmore travels to Clearwater, Florida for spring break to play the University of Rochester on March 14th. The first draw is set for 1:00 p.m.
