No. 13 Gannon Knocks off Regis in Florida

DAVENPORT, Fla. A quick 4-0 run midway through the second half broke open a close match and helped No. 13 Gannon defeat Regis (Colo.) 19-17 Friday afternoon on a neutral field in Davenport, Florida.

Leading 13-11, Gannon scored four times in the span of three minutes and 37 seconds. Four different Lady Knights scored during the run that featured two unassisted goals and two more assisted by Jess Fugate (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster). Stevie Lombardoni's (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) second goal of the match with 14:53 remaining gave the Knights a 17-11 advantage.

However, the match was far from over. Regis rallied with three consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 17-14 at the 12:46 mark. Gannon responded with a free-position goal from Natalie Bonnepart (San Jose, Calif./Gunderson) and an unassisted score from Fugate to extend the lead to 19-14 with 6:40 left.

Regis tried to make one last push with a trio of goals during the final four minutes and 45 seconds. The Rangers pulled within 19-17 on Margaret Nahrup's tally with 1:16 to play, but the squad was unable to get any closer before the final horn.

The opening 10 minutes of the match included ties at one, two, three and four. Gannon erased a 4-3 deficit with three consecutive goals and never trailed again. Christie Valentine (Friendship, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) tied the contest at four with a free-position goal, before Kimberly Neagle (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) broke the deadlock with a score off a Fugate assist.

Valentine's third goal of the first half gave Gannon its biggest lead of the opening stanza at 10-7 with 1:51 left. The Lady Knights eventually went to halftime with a 10-8 lead. The two teams then split the opening six goals of the second half.

Fugate led Gannon with eight points, scoring three times and dishing out a team-high five assists. Valentine and Neagle headlined the scoring attack with four goals each.

Caitlyn Fisher (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair) was the fourth Lady Knight with a hat trick, pumping in three goals. Lombardoni and Bonnepart added two goals each. Becky Hilker (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central SS) completed the scoring with her first career goal. Margaret Maslyn (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) recorded nine saves in the victory, including seven during the first half.

Gannon, ranked No. 13 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Top 15 Poll, evened its early-season record at 1-1 with Friday's victory. Regis dropped to 3-2. The Lady Knights conclude their spring trip Sunday, March 10 at sixth-ranked Limestone. Game time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
