#22 Georgia Tech Goes 8-2 with Victory over Boston University

ATLANTA, GA- The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets improved to 8-2 on the season with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Boston University Terriers at Marist High School when Colin Granger (Tallahassee, FL/Leon) scored the game winner with 90 seconds on the clock.

The Jackets evened the all time series to 1-1, with Boston's victory coming in 2010. The game marked the final meeting between the two schools as the Terries will join the NCAA ranks as a DI team in 2014.

The game was a clear defensive battle from the outset. The first quarter was split possessions by both teams with great looks on the cage with both teams coming up empty for most of the quarter. Tech's goalie Matt Sommerfeldt (Marietta, GA/Pope) was strong between the pipes leading the depleted defense. And finally Tech would break through when freshman Ben Mertz (Grayson, GA/Grayson) scored on a right handed dodge down the alley to give Tech the lead.

After one quarter of play it was 1-0 Jackets. Marist High School was the host for the game and with a crowd over 300 on hand along with Buzz and the GT Pep Band kept the crowd entertained while the close defense was amazing. In the second quarter the BU defense played strong turning away multiple scoring chances for the Jackets.

But the close defense could not hold back the Terriers all night. With one minute remaining in the half Boston would score when Anthony Baum (Portland, OR/Lincoln) ripped a shot past Sommerfeldt on a isolation from behind the cage. The half would end tied 1-1.

The second half started much of the same.. for a while. The game remained scoreless for 15 minutes as both squads played great team defense. On Tech's side close sophomore defensemen Zach Ilisevich (Bethesda, MD/Georgetown Prep), senior Joe Burton (Alpharetta, GA/Milton) and freshman Oliver "Tuna" Gregory (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) along with freshman Danny Coughlin (Atlanta, GA/Marist) kept the striking attack of the Terriers at bay.

With multiple injuries on the defensive end for Tech, freshman David Cyron (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) stepped in with great play all night. As both squads looked for the game breaker it would remain scoreless for 13 plus minutes, until Mr Cluth arrived. Like he did in the three overtime game versus Clemson last week, Granger scored on a bouncer from inside on a feed from Mick Stapleton (Etowah, GA/Etowah) to claim the game winner.

On the ensuing face off freshman Stephen Hughes (Clarence, NY/Clarence) scooped up a crucial ground ball. The offense did their job and killed the clock, even with Boston's goalie Kyle Lange (Boxford,MA/Pingree School) stuffed a shot to give the Terriers a last second chance. But the Tech team would prevail 2-1. The Jackets move on to face #16 ranked SUNY-Bufalo at home on Sunday at 1:00 pm
