Mavericks Take Down Alderson-Broaddus

PHILIPPI, W.Va. (Mar. 8, 2013) - On Friday afternoon, Mercy defeated Alderson-Broaddus by a final score of 13-6 in Philippi, W.Va. Senior Joe Poppe (Elbridge, N.Y.) and sophomore Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y.) tied for the game-high with four goals each. With the victory, the Mavericks improved to 5-0, while the Battlers dropped to 0-4.

The contest was controlled by Mercy from the very beginning. In the opening quarter, the Mavericks netted five goals to the Battlers' three. The second period is when the guests really put on the cruise control as they scored six goals spanning from 12:47 to 1:39. At the half, Mercy led, 11-3.

Alderson-Broaddus scored three more times in the third quarter, but it wouldn't be enough for the Battlers as Mercy tacked on two more markers in the final stanza to win, 13-6.

For the Mavericks, Poppe and Wood had four goals each, while the latter added two assists. Freshman Justin Rohr (Bethpage, N.Y.) had a pair of tallies, while rookie Tyler Van Benschoten (Saddle Brook, N.J.) notched a goal and an assist. Between the pipes, junior Mike Cashman (Bethpage, N.Y.) made three saves in 15 minutes, while freshman Justin Seltzer (Closter, N.J.) stopped two shots in the final 15 minutes. In between them, rookie A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y.) made four saves in 30 minutes.

In all for the Battlers, Thomas Moffat had four goals, while Teigan Haft dished out a trio of assists. In the cage, Josh McCullough stopped 12 shots.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and his team return to action on Saturday, March 9 when the Mavericks play at Ohio Valley. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
