William Smith Rallies Past Nazareth

Nazareth is in action again when the Golden Flyers play against Bridgewater, Virginia, on March 12th in Clermont, Florida. The Golden Flyers return to Nazareth to play Endicott on March 15th.

The William Smith lacrosse team outscored Nazareth 9-3 in the second half, to rally for a 14-11 victory in Rochester, N.Y., this afternoon. The Herons trailed by as many as five three times in the first half, but used an 8-0 run in the second to propel them to their first win of the season.

Sophomore Katie Sipple (Fayettteville-Manlius/Fayetteville, N.Y.) led William Smith with a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists. First-year Meg Hannan (Christian Brothers Academy/Syracuse, N.Y.) shared a game-high with four goals. She also picked up two ground balls. Senior Katie Dexter (Fox Lane/Bedford, N.Y.) and first-year Geneva Calder (Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute/Toronto, Ontario) each chipped in a goal and an assist. Dexter also picked up three ground balls.

Senior Marissa Potter (Concord Carlisle/Concord, Mass.) and sophomore Abbie West (Oak Knoll/Summit, N.J.) added two goals and senior Kathleen Ragan (Masconomet/Topsfield, Mass.) earned two assists. First-year Marina Guigli (Wellesley/Wellesley, Mass.) played the opening 48:12. She made one save and scooped up three ground balls. First-year Allie O'Hara (Joel Barlow/Redding, Conn.) came in for the final 11:48.

Alyssa Johnston led Nazareth (0-2) with five points on two goals and three assists. She also came up with three draw controls. Megan Cregan chipped in four goals, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Amy McIntosh produced two goals. Tara Prosak played all 60 minutes in goal for the Golden Flyers and made 13 saves.

Nazareth controlled the first half, opening the game with a 5-0 run. Johnston scored the first and fifth goals for the Golden Flyers and added two assists in the spurt. West got William Smith on the board at 10:22. Cregan put Nazareth back on top by five with her second tally of the game at 18:12. Sipple logged her third of the season 34 seconds later after pass from Regan to make it 6-2. Carly Gates answered for Nazareth, stretching the lead back to five with 8:13 left in the half.

Back-to-back goals by Hannan and Sipple's second of the game put William Smith within two with 3:19 before the break. McIntosh found the back of the net with 22 seconds left on the clock to give the Golden Flyers an 8-5 advantage at halftime.

Cregan tallied her third of the day to make it 9-5 at 1:13 in the second. First-year Hannah Connolly (Immaculate Heart Central/Watertown, N.Y.) started the Herons' 8-0 run at 3:01. Hannan posted back-to-back goals to make it 9-8. Potter scored her first goal of the season at 9:43 to knot game at nine. At 13:41, Calder gave the Herons their first lead of the contest. Goals by Dexter, Sipple and West rounded out the run, putting William Smith on top 13-9 with 4:13 left in the game. Sipple powered the comeback with a goal and three assists in the Herons' scoring spree.

Just over a minute later, Cregan notched her fourth goal of the game to get the Golden Flyers back within three. Potter logged her second of the day with 2:37 on the clock, and McIntosh notched an unassisted tally with 1:37 remaining for the final.

The Herons enjoyed a 32-19 advantage in shots and a 19-10 edge in ground balls. William Smith also recorded a 15-12 lead in draws.

The Herons will be back in action on Thursday, March 14, when they travel to take on No. 16 Hamilton in another non-league game at 4:00 p.m.
