Western Connecticut Scores Final Three to Top Spartans

CASTLETON, Vt. Castleton held a slight lead midway through the second half, but Western Connecticut scored the final three goals of the game to finish with the 12-9 victory over the Spartans on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

Castleton outshot the Colonials 46-20 and owned a 40-18 advantage in ground balls, but couldn't get by Karlie Portnoy of Western Conn. Portnoy was a impressive in net, making 27 saves while allowing just nine goals to help her team improve to 1-0 on the season. The Spartans meanwhile drop to 0-3 on the year.

Senior Jessica Taplin led Castleton with two goals and two assist as seven different players recorded a goal. Mariah Lesure also added two goals while Sarah Clark had one goal, five ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.

Nicole Perrone led a balanced Colonial offense with two goals and three assists. Devon Edwards added four goals while Kirsten Hudock added a hat trick.

Western Connecticut St. jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first ten minutes. Jessica Taplin tied it up at 17:49 off a nice feed from Samantha Bonasera and Lesure gave the Spartans the lead just 24 seconds later.

Edwards made it 3-3 at 14:26, but Sarah Clark put Castleton in front a minute later. Cori Healy extended the Spartan lead on a nice individual effort at 8:47. Western Connecticut St. responded by scoring three of the final four goals of the half and the teams went into the half tied 6-6.

Lesure put Castleton back on top just 2:55 into the second half on a free position attempt. Neither team scored against until Emily Brooks tied the game with 18:04 remaining. The Spartans countered less than a minute later on an unassisted goal by Amanda Flodstrom.

Lindsay Gorman scored at 16:33, but Brandi Whittemore countered two minutes later for the one-goal lead. No one would score again until Hudock put one past Meghan Els at 4:02. The Colonials scored three more times over the final three minutes to finish with the victory.

Els finished with four saves in net for Castleton. The Spartans return to action on Saturday, Mar. 16 when they travel to face Southern Maine at 3:30 pm.
