Pioneers Upend Potsdam

UTICA, N.Y. Potsdam (0-2) fell to the Utica Pioneers (3-0) this afternoon by a count of 11-7. The Bears were unable to stop a strong Utica scoring effort led by sophomore Megan Kane, who scored five goals for the Pioneers.

Scoring for the Pioneers started early, but the Bears were able to answer and even the score about two minutes into the game with a goal from sophomore attack Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East).

After a second Utica goal, senior attack Denise Johns (Marcellus N.Y./Marcellus) tied the score at 2-2 with 22:49 remaining in the first. Utica then went on a 4-0 scoring run to close out the first half.

The Pioneers continued to roll in the second half, scoring three straight goals before Potsdam could answer with 13:58 remaining with a goal from senior attack Whitney Boshart (Watertown, N.Y./Indian River).

After another Utica goal the Bears began to chip away at the lead, scoring twice within a minute. The first goal came from Johns with 9:53 remaining in the contest and the second by sophomore midfielder Margaret Wall (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas).

Utica struck again at 8:05 to take an 11-5 lead, but couldn't shake the Bears. Freshman attack Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) scored with 5:07 left. Weigel added her second goal of the day with just 00:59 seconds remaining in the contest, but the lead was too large for the Bears to overcome.

Junior goalie Jen Chmiel (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) made her second career start for Potsdam, finishing with the day with 7. The Pioneers topped the Bears in shots 29-18 and groundballs 24-13.
