Scranton Snaps Three-Game Skid with Win Over Lycoming

MALVERN, Pa.-University of Scranton jumped out to a 6-1 lead by intermission and never looked back en route to a 9-4 victory over Lycoming in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Malvern Preparatory School.

Senior attacker Taylor Nelson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) led the way with three goals and an assist and senior midfielder Dillion McInerney (Hawthorne, NJ/Bergen Catholic) and sophomore attacker Will Mahle (Montgomery, NJ/Montgomery) added a pair as the Royals snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 2-3.

Junior attacker Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) scored three of the Warriors' four goals and sophomore Steve Troup (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) added the other as Lycoming fell to 1-5.

Coming off a morale-building 8-3 loss to top-ranked Cortland State on the road Wednesday, the Royals left little to chance. Nelson scored twice in the first period and McInerney added two more in the second as Scranton took advantage of sophomoreMatt Finor's (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) ability to dominate the face-offs, winning 7 of 9 in the first half alone to keep Lycoming on the defensive side of the field. For the game, Finor won 11 of 17 face-off attempts.

The Royals out-shot the Warriors, 18-11, and held a 19-11 margin in ground balls by intermission.

Scranton also received a goal and an assist from freshman Alec Mikrut (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery), a goal from junior attacker Gus Sturm (Devon, Pa./Conastoga), two assists from junior midfielder John Gregitis (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph's Preparatory), and an assist apiece from freshman midfielder Brad Elkin (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Preparatory), and senior defenseman Brendan Synan (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac).

Senior Ben Worthington (Jenkintown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) made 10 saves to pick up his 19th career win, which is the second most by a goalkeeper in Scranton history. Sophomore Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) made 10 saves for Lycoming.

Nelson's four-point effort today moves him into 20th place on the Royals' all-time scoring list with 102 points (70 goals, 32 assists). He is also tied for 18th place for most career goals.

The Royals will take on cross-town rival Marywood University next Saturday, March 16, at Pacer Field in Scranton beginning at 12:00 p.m..
