No. 12 Syracuse Gets by St. John's at Independence Classic

McArdle struck first scoring as flags flew in for a crosscheck from behind. Cernuto kept things rolling with back-to-back man-up goals in less than a minute. The first came off an assist from Keegan and the second was the result of a fortunate bounce off the helmet of Ryan Fitzgerald that found its way to a waiting Cernuto in front of net. McArdle's third goal of the game, from another ridiculous angle, tied the score 8-8 and capped the Johnnies' onslaught.

Kevin Rice scored for Syracuse to reclaim the advantage, but James Bonnano's first-career goal evened the score once again. A Megill goal in transition gave the Orange a 10-9 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Cernuto provided the game's final tie with 13:30 to play as he wrapped around the cage towards his left before beating Syracuse goalie Bobby Wardwell down low. Cometti and Derek Dejoe scored in the first five minutes of the final period to put the Orange up 12-10. McArdle tried to ignite one final push for St. John's with a goal from the side of net to cut the lead to 12-11 with 6:25 remaining. The final goal of the game came from Loy to put Syracuse up 13-11 with 5:13 left to play. The Orange limited the Red Storm's chances and prevented St. John's from closing the gap.

The Red Storm takes on Big East foe Rutgers on Saturday, March 16 at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, N.Y. Faceoff is set for 1:00 p.m. and will broadcast on ESPN3 as an STJ-TV production.
